The photoelectric conversion element or dye-sensitized solar cell uses a compound represented by the formula (1) as the squarylium dye. In the formula (1), R1 and R2 represent a substituted or unsubstituted C5 to C30 alkyl group; X represents C(CH3)2; and A and B represent a carboxy group.
