  • Publication number: 20240260910
Abstract: Hydrocephalus and shunt-related expenditures cost the US system over $2 billion dollars in annual expenses, with 125,000 shunt surgeries per year and an untreated mortality rate estimated at 50-60%. Existing diagnostics are expensive, inaccurate, and often harmful or invasive, and can lead to unnecessary admissions, further testing, or needless surgery. Collaborative efforts between Northwestern materials engineers headed by Dr. John Rogers alongside the leadership of neurological surgeons at Northwestern Memorial Hospital and Lurie Children's Hospital have produced and validated a noninvasive, thermal biosensor capable of diagnosing ventricular shunt malfunction.

  • Publication number: 20240245856
Abstract: Rapidly administered emergency drug therapy represents life-saving treatment for a range of acute conditions including hypoglycemia, anaphylaxis, and cardiac arrest. A miniaturized (e.g., <3 cm3), lightweight (e.g., <2 g), minimally invasive fully wireless, emergency rescue device for the storage and active burst-release of indefinitely stable particulate forms of peptide and hormone drugs into subcutaneous sites for direct reconstitution in interstitial biofluids is disclosed. The device demonstrates a fast (e.g., <5 minutes) therapeutic effect. The device may deliver a drug across fibrotic tissue, which commonly accumulates following in vivo implantation, thereby accelerating systemic delivery. Fully wireless delivery of dry particulate glucagon in vivo is demonstrated, providing emergency hypoglycemic rescue in diabetic mice. Additionally, triggered delivery of epinephrine is demonstrated in vivo.

  • Publication number: 20230017523
Abstract: A bioelectronic device houses therapeutic cells and is configured to be implanted in a host. The device includes an electrochemical cell that produces oxygen gas from water when a voltage is applied. The oxygen gas produced by the electrochemical cell is stored in a gas diffusion chamber in the device. The therapeutic cells in a cell housing chamber in the device receive oxygen gas from the gas diffusion chamber to help keep the cells alive and functioning when the device is implanted in a low oxygen environment. The device receives power wirelessly.

  • Publication number: 20170347891
Abstract: Devices and methods useful for sensing epidermal tissue are disclosed. Thermal data from the devices allows for determination of thermal transport properties, such as thermal conductivity, thermal diffusivity and heat capacity per unit volume. From these data, tissue parameters, such as hydration state, stratum corneum thickness, epidermis thickness and vasculature structure may be determined. These parameters may be used, for example, to evaluate the efficacy of dermatological compounds.
