  • Patent number: 4899056
Abstract: A method of disinfecting waste water wherein ultraviolet light producing lamps are positioned in lamp modules and contained within quartz lamps jackets and wherein the modules are positioned within a flow of water including removing particulates and films for the lamp jackets wherein one or more of the modules from the flow are removed, transported and inserted into a tank containing a lamp jacket cleaning agent. The invention further includes a cleaning system for removing particulates and films from lamp jackets consisting of a channel through which waste water to be cleaned passes, one or more modules positioned in the channel, the modules containing one or more ultraviolet light producing lamps, each lamp sealed from direct contact with the water by surrounding quartz jackets, the lamps being spaced apart to permit the water to flow there between to expose the water and ultraviolet light rays.

  • Patent number: 4767932
Abstract: An ultraviolet purification device for irradiating liquids with ultraviolet radiation either in an open system or a closed system which includes a frame or vessel provided with a header plate and a spaced apart support grid for supporting therebetween a plurality of quartz jackets. Each jacket is provided with an open end which extends beyond the header plate and in which one or more ultraviolet lamps are disposed in tamdem therein. The arrangement is such that the respective lamps are disposed in rows or banks wherein the respective rows or banks can be independently energized depending upon the flow rate of the liquid. Each lamp is constructed so that the electrical contacts for the respective lamp electrodes project from a common end of the lamp, thereby permitting the lamps to be inserted from one side of the frame or vessel. An improved spacer is also provided for spacially supporting each lamp within its respective jacket.

  • Patent number: 4700101
Abstract: A tubular gaseous discharge lamp such as an ultraviolet or fluorescent lamp is provided which includes a hollow cylinder which is connected to a pair of end caps on each of which there is mounted an electrode. The first electrode is connected to an insulated or Teflon coated wire which is disposed along the outside surface of the cylinder and passes through the end cap which supports the second electrode. The second electrode is connected to a second insulated or Teflon coated wire which projects from the second end cap. The wires facilitate connection of the ultraviolet lamp to a source of electrical power which is located at one end of the lamp.In an alternative embodiment of the invention two or more ultraviolet lamps are inserted into a hollow quartz tube, thereby providing an ultraviolet light source of extended length, or two or more fluorescent lamps may be used in single end application.

  • Patent number: 4358204
Abstract: An ultrasonic cleaning assembly for cleaning large objects immersed in liquid within a chamber, such as an array of elongated ultraviolet lamps within an ultraviolet purification tank. The cleaning assembly includes an elongated ultrasonic transducer extending across the width of the chamber and having a width appreciably smaller than the length of the chamber and the objects therein to be cleaned. Motor-driven apparatus is provided for moving the transducer within the chamber in such a manner as to direct the ultrasonic waves emitted by the transducer to all interior portions of the chamber, thereby applying the ultrasonic cleaning effect over the entire extent of all the objects within the chamber. In a first embodiment the transducer is moved linearly in a horizontal direction across the length of the chamber, and in a second embodiment, the transducer is centrally mounted within the chamber and is rotated about its longitudinal axis.

  • Patent number: 4201916
Abstract: An ultraviolet radiation sensor for use in a liquid purification system senses ultraviolet radiation present in an incident beam containing ultraviolet and visible radiation and includes a beamsplitter which reflects ultraviolet radiation and transmits visible radiation. The reflected ultraviolet radiation impinges on a glass plate having a phosphor layer which emits visible radiation. The visible radiation emitted impinges on a photocell which is connected to an electrical meter and thereby provides a measure of the ultraviolet radiation present. The visible radiation transmitted through the beamsplitter enables visual monitoring of a source of radiation while simultaneous ultraviolet measurements are made.

  • Patent number: 4103167
Abstract: An ultraviolet liquid purification system includes a purification chamber having banks of ultraviolet lamps distributed therein for applying germicidal ultraviolet radiation to the liquid flowing through in said chamber. Ultraviolet photocell detectors are located in said chamber to detect the level of ultraviolet radiation transmitted through the quartz jacket housing the ultraviolet lamps and through the liquid being purified. Indicator means produce an alarm signal when the total ultraviolet radiation transmitted through the liquid drops below a preselected level. In addition, a light conducting fiber is provided for each ultraviolet lamp having its input endface located at the ultraviolet lamp and its output endface at a display panel whereby identification of a particular ultraviolet lamp that has failed may be easily detected. Photocell detector means are provided to detect the light output at the output endface of the light conductor fiber and to produce an alarm signal when said light output fails.

  • Patent number: 3948772
Abstract: A split stream ultraviolet purification device, for the treatment of liquids that are normally opaque to ultraviolet radiation, is provided with means for adding a selected amount of clear water to the inlet stream of untreated liquid entering a ultraviolet purification chamber. The clear water dilutes the opaque untreated liquid sufficiently to assure that the ultraviolet radiation level transmitted to the liquid flowing through the purification chamber is of a dosage high enough to effect complete disinfection. A control system regulates the flow of clear water to maintain a preselected level of ultraviolet radiation in the purification chamber and the control system diverts the discharge of the purification chamber to the source of untreated liquid in the event that the level of ultraviolet radiation in the purification chamber falls below the preselected level.
