  • Publication number: 20130008624
Abstract: A split stirring roll including two half-rolls aligned at a distance from one another, each incorporating a polyphase linear inductor mounted fixedly a short distance from outer tubular bodies of each half-roll to arrange between them an annular space for circulation of a cooling fluid; each inductor can generate a traveling magnetic field sliding along the width of a cast slab. The two half-rolls are mounted externally in end rolling bearings and internally in a common intermediate rolling bearing attached between them, the inductors including narrowed-diameter hollow terminal portions to rest in the three rolling bearings and communicate with a cooling circuit including the annular spaces. The split stirring roll is configured for continuous casting of extra-wide slabs and can form a preferred tool for controlled electromagnetic stirring of molten metal for optimized exchange of material between a top and bottom of a casting machine.

  • Patent number: 8011417
Abstract: A process for continuous casting of slabs or other metal products of elongate cross section, for example made of steel, in which a molten metal is poured into a cooled mold, and the externally solidified product is continuously extracted from the mold and guided in a secondary cooling zone downstream of the mold. To obtain a cast product exhibiting predominantly equiaxed solidification, the product extracted from the mold is subjected to electromagnetic stirring in segment zero of the secondary cooling zone by at least two stirrer-rolls incorporated into the segment zero.

  • Patent number: 7938166
Abstract: In the continuous casting of flat metal products with a submerged nozzle having lateral outlets, a mold is equipped on each of its long sides with a pair of linear inductors that generate a magnetic field that travels horizontally over a width of the long sides and are placed on sides of the nozzle. The inductors are mounted in pairs to slide vertically over the height of the mold, and by being moved, pass from a low stirring position, located level with the outlets of the nozzle, to a high stirring position, located level with a meniscus of the liquid metal in the mold, and vice versa. Also, on passing from one position to the other, the connections for the inductors to the phases of the power supply are modified to reverse the direction of travel of the magnetic field of only one of the two inductors of each pair.

  • Patent number: 7201211
Abstract: The invention concerns a continuous casting ingot mold equipped with an immersed nozzle (3) provided with lateral outlets (2) opposite the small sides (5) of the ingot mold, and whereof the pattern of molten metal flows can be naturally in single loop or double loop, or even unstable. The invention is characterized in that it consists in using sliding magnetic fields acting, at the nozzle, on the flows of liquid metal reaching the ingot mold through the nozzle orifices, said magnetic fields being generated by polyphase linear electromagnetic field windings (14, 14?, 15, 15?) arranged opposite at least one side of the ingot mold on either side of the nozzle, preferably opposite one large side and advantageously both, so as to set, or stabilizes, a permanent pattern in double loop mode.

  • Publication number: 20070074845
Abstract: A stirring method provides overall stirring of metal over a metallurgical length, thereby ensuring both thermal and chemical uniformity between a top and bottom of a liquid pool without correspondingly being deprived of beneficial effects specific to stirring in a mold and in a secondary cooling zone respectively, and without disturbing, but rather stabilizing, local flow mode in the mold.

  • Patent number: 6929055
Abstract: The apparatus comprises a submerged entry nozzle (6) having outlets in the main casting plane (P) which differ in their direction of output and fall within two categories (7, 8). The nozzle is associated with two inductors (14, 15) opposite each other on each broad face (22) of the casting mold forming a gap which surrounds the nozzle and produces a traversing magnetic field covering the outlets of at least one category (7). Elements are provided for adjusting the intensity of the field or for moving it so as to be able to change the distribution between the outlets of the total flow of molten metal. Implementing the invention makes it possible to adjust at any time that fraction of the metal flow which is directed toward the free surface (9) with respect to that, main, fraction directed toward the bottom of the mold.

  • Patent number: 6164365
Abstract: Both an apparatus and method are provided for electromagnetically braking a flow of molten metal during a continuous casting operation. The apparatus includes an electric electromagnetic inductor of the traveling-magnetic-field polyphase stator-type connected to a source of electrical power. The inductor is mounted on a casting plant opposite one face of the product being cast, and has two or three phase windings. The electrical power supply of the apparatus includes two or three elementary DC sources, each of which can be adjusted in terms of current intensity independent of one another. Each of the elementary electrical DC sources is connected to one, and only one of the phase windings of the inductor. The arrangement of the apparatus allows a flow of molten, ferromagnetic metal such as steel to be adjustably braked by merely adjusting the parameters of the source of electrical supply.

  • Patent number: 5743324
Abstract: A downstream connection block (GB) constituted by connector halves (FB1) is electrically connected in permanent manner to a moving assembly (EB). An upstream connection block (GA) is electrically connected in permanent manner to a stationary power supply block (BA) by flexible conductors (CA). A carriage (K) transfers the upstream block (GA) alternately between a front position (PB) providing electrical connection enabling the moving assembly to be powered, and a rear position (PA) remote from the downstream block (GB). The carriage separates from the upstream block when it is to leave said block in said front position. The invention is particularly applicable to electrically powering electromagnetic stirring inductors carried by an oscillating mold in a continuous steel casting installation.
