Publication number: 20250177005Abstract: A geared-motor assembly for use in a spatial frame is disclosed. Each of the geared-motor assemblies being selectively attachable and detachable from a manually adjustable strut in a spatial frame. In use, with the geared-motor assemblies detached, the struts can be manually adjusted (e.g., rotated) to, for example, facilitate initial construction of the spatial frame in the operating room, to allow patients to manually adjust the struts if desired, etc. Thereafter, with the geared-motor assemblies coupled to the struts, motorized and/or automated adjustment of the struts according to a treatment plan can be achieved. In use, each of the geared-motor assemblies is configured as a stand-alone device including all of the needed intelligence (e.g., microprocessor, printed-circuit board, etc.) and power supply to control and power the geared-motor assembly so that no external wires or centralized controller is required.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 14, 2023Publication date: June 5, 2025Applicants: Smith & Nephew, Inc., Smith & Nephew Orthopaedics AG, Smith & Nephew Asia Pacific PTE. LimitedInventors: Paul Bell, Sied Janna, Darren J. Wilson, Andrew P. Noblett, Brian Roberts, Johnny R. Mason, Scott Smyth

Publication number: 20240261009Abstract: Disclosed herein is a self-countersinking bone screw and a system and a method for countersinking a bone screw or fastener used in connection with an orthopedic implant such as, for example, an intramedullary nail. The bone screw includes one or more cutting features configured to self-countersink the head of the screw. The system and method utilize instrumentation including a plurality of markings or indicia configured to indicate a position of the head of the screw relative to an outer surface of the patient's bone. In use, the method enables a surgeon to quickly and easily countersink one or more bone screws used to couple an IM nail to a patient's bone without requiring additional instrumentation to form a countersunk hole in the patient's bone.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 15, 2022Publication date: August 8, 2024Applicants: Smith & Nephew, Inc., Smith & Nephew Orthopaedics AG, Smith & Nephew Asia Pacific Pte. LimitedInventors: Sied Janna, Henry B. Faber, Nathaniel Kelley Grusin, Charles R. Bennett

Publication number: 20220125535Abstract: A surgical robotic arm (520) for use with an external vision system (512) includes onboard control and at least four degrees of articulation. The robotic arm (520) can position various tools (534) in the surgical theatre responsive to positional feedback from the vision system (512). Exemplary tools (534) include a handpiece (519) that includes a motorized burr or saw, a cutting guide (542) for a handheld saw, and a laser to actively define a resection area for a surgeon. The tool (534) or a reference point on the arm (520) relative to the tool (534) includes fiducial marks to register the position of the tool (534) with the vision system (512). Exemplary tools (534) are especially suited for knee and hip arthroplasty and can be moved under processor or manual control.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 11, 2020Publication date: April 28, 2022Inventors: Sied JANNA, Alisha BERGIN, David DAVIDSON, Dinendra RAMACHANDRAN, Kavya SURESH, Rishii Nandhan KONGANAPURAM, Constantinos NIKOU, Manogna GHALI, Riddhit MITRA, Brian W. Patent number: 9031637Abstract: A system for targeting landmarks on devices such as surgical implants is disclosed. The system can include a field generator for generating one or more magnetic fields, an orthopaedic implant located within the magnetic fields, the implant having at least one landmark, a removable probe with a first magnetic sensor, a landmark identifier and a processor. The landmark identifier can contain a second sensor, or, alternatively, the field generator. The processor can utilize sensor data and, if desirable, field generator and other information, to generate and display the position and orientation of the sensor(s) in preferably six degrees of freedom, and thereby, to generate and display the position and orientation of the landmark(s). The system allows for blind targeting of one or more landmarks. The landmark identifier, field generator and/or drill motor may be disposed in an autoclavable housing.Type: GrantFiled: April 12, 2010Date of Patent: May 12, 2015Assignee: Smith & Nephew, Inc.Inventors: Nicholas S. Patent number: 7410488Abstract: The present invention relates to a nail and fastener assembly for use in providing a stable construct for optimal fixation of the hindfoot and to methods for implanting the nail and fastener assembly. One embodiment of the nail and fastener assembly provides additional fixation, for example, in the form of one or more threaded bores, to hold the fasteners in a fixed position. Another embodiment provides angled bores to allow multi-planar and multi-axial implantation of the fasteners. In some instances, the fasteners may cross one or more articulating surfaces of the foot. For example, the fastener may traverse one or more of the calcaneo-cuboid and the talo-calcaneal articulating surfaces to aid in more secure stabilization of the hindfoot.Type: GrantFiled: February 18, 2005Date of Patent: August 12, 2008Assignee: Smith & Nephew, Inc.Inventors: Si Janna, William Stewart, Roy Sanders

Publication number: 20080030345Abstract: A system and method for identifying, locating, and managing inventory of sterilized medical devices located within a sealed sterilization case in preparation for a surgical procedure. Communication tags, such as radio frequency identification (RFID) and/or Global Positioning System (GPS) tags, are connected to the medical device and communicate information wirelessly. Information is obtained from the communication tags and sent to the database where it is compared with the information in the database. The results may be displayed on the interface thereby providing the user with information about the medical instruments contained in the sealed sterilization case without breaking the seal of the sealed sterilization case.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 24, 2007Publication date: February 7, 2008Applicant: Smith & Nephew, Inc.Inventors: Gene Austin, Ralph Donati, Nicholas Granville, Mark Hulen, Sied Janna, Robert Morgan, James Rains, Randall Troutman, Darren Wilson
