  • Patent number: 6009871
Abstract: A ventilating apparatus includes a closed breathing loop (3) which is supplied with the gases needed for ventilation via a metering unit (9). The ventilating apparatus is improved in such a manner that the respiratory gas can be metered during the inspiration phase without affecting the respiratory gas stroke volume supplied to the patient. The ventilating apparatus includes a flow-measuring device (14) for detecting a gas volume (V.sub.F) which is metered into the closed breathing loop (3) during the inspiration phase. A subtraction element (16) forms a difference volume (V.sub.T -V.sub.F) between the pump volume (V.sub.T) and the gas volume (V.sub.F). A switch (21) permits utilizing the difference volume (V.sub.T -V.sub.F) as a new adjusting value for the pump volume of the respiratory gas pump unit (2).

  • Patent number: 5253640
Abstract: A process for calibrating a flow sensor in a respiratory system, with final control elements arranged in the respiratory system for influencing the respiration gas stream, is to be improved in terms of the influence of the qualitative gas composition of the respiration gas. To accomplish the task, the final control elements 4, 11 are switched, for calibration, over to a closed respiratory system with directed respiration gas stream. The drive unit 13 feeds the respiration gas present in the respiratory system through the flow sensor 9 according to a predetermined time-volume relationship. A calibration value for the flow sensor 9 is formed by comparison of the time-volume relationship with the measured signal of the flow sensor 9.

  • Patent number: 5243973
Abstract: A metering device for a liquid anesthetic that is fed from a reservoir via a supply line into a heatable intermediate container maintained under pressure, from which gaseous anesthetic is fed via a metering valve into a fresh gas line. Accurate metering, which can be better monitored, is provided for low-boiling anesthetics. A supply unit 7 is mounted in the supply line 5, and liquid anesthetic is transported by the supply unit 7 into the intermediate container 6 until it is filled up to a predetermined filling level. A heating device 12 stabilizes the temperature of the liquid bath and ensures a sufficiently high vapor pressure of the gaseous anesthetic above the liquid phase. The anesthetic vapor is sent via the metering valve into the fresh gas line.

  • Patent number: 5119810
Abstract: The invention is directed to a ventilating apparatus including a ventilating device and a closed breathing circuit wherein fresh gas is metered by means of a controller via a fresh gas line. A reservoir having a changeable volume is connected to the fresh gas line. In this way, at least the quantity of respirating gas which is consumed is again replenished. This arrangement is improved such that a very small quantity of respirating gas can be metered with the compliance of the entire system being low and remaining necessarily constant. With the invention, a system is obtained which is easy to control with the smallest possible configuration and least complex measuring sensors. For this purpose, a reservoir connected downstream of the metering unit is branched off of the fresh gas line and is provided with a level indicator. The signal of the level indicator indicates the level and is supplied as an actual value to the controller and compared to a pregiven desired value.

  • Patent number: 5049317
Abstract: The invention is directed to an arrangement for generating and metering a gas mixture which includes controllable adjusting elements whereby the gas mixture is either conducted through a bypass line past a vaporizer unit to a consumer or is conducted through the vaporizer unit and from there to the consumer. With this arrangement, a calibration of the carrier gas metering especially at low flow quantities is obtained which is continuously reproducible and either carried out manually or automatically without interruption of the metering operation. This is achieved in that a calibrating line opens into a calibrating vessel upstream of the vaporizer unit and the calibrating vessel can be separated by way of shutoff valves from the vaporizer line and a level indicator is connected to the calibrating vessel.

  • Patent number: 4924861
Abstract: A piston and cylinder unit provides a supply actuable by means of an actuation device for delivering respiratory air in a respiratory cycle of a respirator. Its piston is sealed with its cylinder by means of a pair of rolling membranes arranged symmetrically with regard to one another. The membranes separate the cylinder contents into an antechamber and a working chamber. The wear of the rolling membranes during the working strokes and especially during the starting is decreased by a clean rolling of the folds. Also a leakage control takes place even during operation and an immediate detection of leaks due to bending stress, aging or other influences is guaranteed. For this purpose an inner chamber which is enclosed by the two rolling membranes is under a pressure different from the pressure in the antechamber and the working chamber so that the highest pressure is on a concave inside of the folds.

  • Patent number: 4922900
Abstract: The invention is directed to a pumping arrangement for supplying a ventilating apparatus with breathing gas. The pumping arrangement includes a piston which runs in a cylinder and the piston is connected via a coupling with a drive unit for generating the pumping strokes. The coupling engages a motion transmitter in the form of a piston rod. Gas connecting ports for the breathing gas to be pumped open into the inner chamber of the cylinder. The pumping arrangement permits the piston-cylinder unit to be simply removed and to be reinstalled with reliable guidance. An automatic latching occurs such that a release and removal of the piston-cylinder unit from the ventilating apparatus and its uncoupling from the drive unit is possible only in a rest condition and not during operation.

  • Patent number: 4909246
Abstract: A respirator comprises a respiratory air circulation unit with an adjustable displacement volume and a respiratory air supply line and a respiratory system comprising an inspiration loop, an expiration loop and valve elements mounted in these loops. The valve elements are controllable by means of a control unit, so that small as well as large displacement volumes can be executed by means of a single circulation unit with the smallest space requirements possible. For this purpose the inspiration phase is divided into several sub-phases, during which the control unit controls the valve elements and the respiratory air circulation unit 4 so that several fillings of the adjustable displacement volume are supplied to the inspiration loop and only then is the expiration phase initiated. Thus the displacement volume of the circulation unit can be kept small.

  • Patent number: 4788860
Abstract: A hot-wire sensor integrally measuring material or volume flows in a conduit must be so configured that an integral average velocity can be determined. This takes into account the variable velocity distribution along the radius. To achieve the foregoing, the hot wire either is installed opposite the longitudinal axis of the conduit or has a thickness which changes symmetrically with respect to the longitudinal axis of the conduit with the portions of larger thickness being disposed near the inner wall surface of the conduit.
