  • Patent number: 9857454
Abstract: A range-gated Doppler radar configured to mitigate the effects of pulsed interference. A Doppler filter is constructed using a vector of weights, the vector of weights being calculated as the matrix product of (i) the inverse of an reduced overall covariance matrix and (ii) a reduced progressive phasor vector. The reduced overall covariance matrix is formed by deleting from an overall covariance matrix rows and columns corresponding to pulses corrupted by pulsed interference. The reduced progressive phasor vector is formed by deleting from a progressive phasor vector elements corresponding to pulses corrupted by pulsed interference. The elements of the progressive phasor vector have constant modulus and the phase of the elements changes linearly within the vector. The overall covariance matrix is a weighted sum of an identity matrix and several specific covariance matrices, that may represent distributed clutter with positive velocity, distributed clutter with negative velocity, and ground clutter.

  • Patent number: 9360549
Abstract: Methods and apparatus provide calibration of a system using a cable check configuration and a calibration test configuration. A short to ground reflects an injected signal to characterize a first signal path in the cable check configuration. Switch setting can then be adjusted to inject a signal that is coupled to an array element and received from a feed. The signal paths can be characterized to enable in-field calibration testing.

  • Patent number: 6768455
Abstract: A method for detecting calibration probe displacement for a phased array antenna includes steps of: creating a gold standard set of antenna element phases of the phased array antenna; determining a set of element phase sensitivities of the phased array antenna; measuring a set of antenna element phases relative to array displacement of the phased array antenna; and forming a set of equations using the gold standard set of antenna element phases, the set of element phase sensitivities, and the set of antenna element phases relative to array displacement. The set of equations has an array displacement vector x as unknown; and solving the set of equations for the array displacement vector x provides the location and orientation of the calibration probe displacement.

  • Patent number: 5400035
Abstract: A radar target discrimination method (50) prevents sidelobe monopulse tracking. The beamwidth difference between the main beam monopulse and sidelobe monopulse is utilized to distinguish the main beam monopulse tracks from sidelobe monopulse tracks. After the first monopulse beam (52, 54), the monopulse beam is moved (58) to two additional beam pointing angles such that the target will stay on the same side of the true main beam monopulse slope but will fall on the opposite side of the sidelobe monopulse slope. The sign and magnitude of the difference/sum (.DELTA./.EPSILON.) measurements (60, 62, 64) can be used to distinguish a valid main beam track from a false sidelobe track. False tracks are detected if the signs of the difference/sum measurements are not identical, or if the magnitudes of the measurements do not monotonically increase or decrease.

  • Patent number: 5253188
Abstract: An apparatus for testing a microwave phased array antenna having a plurality of radiating elements includes a transmission line for signal injection and switching components to selectively establish signal paths from a transmitter, and through a plurality of transmit/receive modules, to a performance monitor. In accordance with the present invention the switching components can be set to establish a receive signal path through the apparatus to test the receive mode of the individual modules. Alternatively, the switching components can be set to establish a transmit signal path through the apparatus to test the transmit mode of the individual modules. Further, the switching components can be set to selectively establish a receive signal path or a transmit signal path through either isolated individual modules or through all modules simultaneously.

  • Patent number: 5081460
Abstract: Faulty subarray module circuit boards are detected in a phased array antenna having many subarray module circuit boards while the antenna is fully assembled and operationally integrated with a radar system. A far field ratio frequency test source illuminates the antenna. Binary digital signals that control subarray steering bits are set to a reference setting. A particular subarray module circuit board that is under test has its 180.degree. main phase bit toggled between 0.degree. and 180.degree.. The radar selects the output of that particular subarray module by Doppler filter type of software filtering. The amplitude of the in-phase and quadrature phase signals from the radar is recorded. The binary digital signals that control subarray steering bits are set to a second setting. The 180.degree. main phase bit of the module under test is again toggled between 0.degree. and 180.degree.. The output of the module under test is again selected by Doppler filter type of software filtering.
