  • Patent number: 4649114
Abstract: The growth of animal cells in a fermenter is promoted by enriching the liquid nutrient medium or broth with oxygen diffused into the liquid through a permeable membrane, such as one made of silicone rubber or polytetrafluoroethylene (Teflon). Superior cell growth in larger volumes is achieved by feeding in the oxygen in this way instead of bubbling it in.

  • Patent number: 4465475
Abstract: An injector for squeezing liquid from a medical syringe is disclosed. On a housing (10), a first holder is (11) fastened. A first end of a syringe cylinder is joined to the first holder (11). The syringe piston (15) is joined to a second holder (13). The second holder (13) is fastened to a slide (12) which is displaceable relative to the housing (10). The drive of the slide (12) is effected by way of a pipe (26) and a ball gear (27, 28) on a spindle (28). The end of the spindle (28) is connected with the slide (12) through a free-wheeling mechanism. The spindle (28) can be rotated by hand with a rotary button (30). When the free-wheeling mechanism is released, the slide (12) can be pulled linearly into a desired position. The ball gear drive mechanism (27, 28) ensures that when the motor is turned on, the slide (12) is driven at once without first requiring an engagement of a tooth system or a screwthread.

  • Patent number: 4300554
Abstract: Disclosed is a portable continuous infusion apparatus for administering an injectable liquid to a patient. The apparatus expells the contents of a syringe on a time controlled basis. It employs two separate springs, with one spring used to power a clockwork and another spring to power a gear rack to advance the syringe plunger or piston. Opening and shutting the apparatus cover automatically winds both springs simultaneously. A safety prevents closing the cover unless the springs are wound. Advancement of the gear rack is adjustable by a control which acts on an escapement lever which regulates an escape wheel. The control moves the escapement lever axially so it can engage a different number of wings on the escape wheel, thereby regulating the incremental advance of the gear rack acting on the syringe plunger.
