Patent number: 6551562Abstract: Method and apparatus for guiding a web of paper or board or, alternatively, an edge strip sheared therefrom, in a paper machine or finishing equipment, the method being particularly suited for threading the web tail or edge strip through the machine in conjunction with a production shutdown or after a web break. According to the invention, the web (6) or its tail sheared from the web so as to form an edge strip is supported electrically by means of taking surfaces or electrodes (3, 5) disposed on opposite sides of the web (6) to different potentials. Particularly advantageously, the web (6) or the edge strip can be adhered to a roll (16), a belt (7) or a wire by taking said support element to a lower potential and disposing a higher-potential electrode (5) or a number of electrodes to the opposite side of the web.Type: GrantFiled: March 30, 2001Date of Patent: April 22, 2003Assignee: Valmet CorporationInventors: Vesa Ahvenniemi, Jorma Kinnunen, Seppo Luomi, Silvo Mikkonen, Vilho Nissinen

Patent number: 5782426Abstract: A method and device for reeling a paper or board web, wherein a first reel spool is in a reeling position in nip-defining relationship with a reeling cylinder and an empty second reel spool is placed in a stand-by position, the web is carried on a belt until it is reeled onto the first reel spool and the belt is guided in a run over the reeling cylinder and a guide roll, the first reel spool being transferred from the reeling position and pushed by the guide roll to a change position and the second reel spool is moved to the reeling position when the reel formed on the first reel spool is complete.Type: GrantFiled: September 26, 1996Date of Patent: July 21, 1998Assignee: Valmet Corp.Inventors: Jorma Kinnunen, Silvo Mikkonen

Patent number: 5779183Abstract: A method and a device for finishing the surface layers of the machine reel (13) that is formed during reeling of the web (P). In the method; a member (20) that presses the web is brought onto the face of the reel (12) that is being completed before the reel (12) that is being completed is transferred to the reel change position. The full reel (12) is transferred to the reel change position so that the member (20) that presses the web during nip-free reeling forms a contact with the web, which contact prevents access of air between the web layers, and follows the full reel (12) during its transfer to the reel change position. During the reeling of the surface layer to be finished, the member (20) that presses the web is shifted apart from the face of the reel (12) that is being completed along such a path (D) of movement that the member (20) that presses the web maintains a contact of the desired extent with the face of the reel (12) that is being completed.Type: GrantFiled: May 28, 1996Date of Patent: July 14, 1998Assignee: Valmet CorporationInventors: Esa Aalto, Markku Kyytsonen, Aaron Mannio, Silvo Mikkonen

Patent number: 5709355Abstract: A splicing device for a continuous unwind stand for splicing a web of a new machine reel at full speed with a web of a machine reel being emptied including a frame, a first splicing roll and a second roll, the web of the machine reel being emptied running over the first and second rolls, and an elongate lever member having first and second opposed ends. The first roll is mounted at the first end and the second roll is mounted at the second end of the lever and the lever is pivotally mounted to the frame for pivoting between a first basic running position in which the first roll is spaced from the new machine reel and a second splicing position in which the first roll is in nip-defining engagement with the new machine reel and the new machine reel is spliced to the web of the machine reel being emptied. The lever pivots about an articulation point situated between a central axis of the first roll and a central axis of the second roll.Type: GrantFiled: February 15, 1996Date of Patent: January 20, 1998Assignee: Valmet CorporationInventors: Jorma Kinnunen, Silvo Mikkonen

Patent number: 5531396Abstract: A method and device for reeling a paper or board web in a drum reel-up or equivalent, in which, when a paper or board reel formed on a reel spool situated in a reeling position becomes complete, a new reel spool is brought by transfer members into a stand-by position and accelerated up to the web speed. The reel spool with the complete reel is transferred into an exchange position apart from the reel drum and the new, initially accelerated reel spool is transferred into the reeling position. When the reel spool with its reel is transferred into the exchange position apart from the reel drum, the belt guide roll is transferred into nip-defining relationship with the complete reel that is being formed onto the reel spool and is displaced along with the reel spool into the exchange position so that the web runs during the entire exchange on support of the belt and through a nip between the guide roll and the reel spool.Type: GrantFiled: December 15, 1994Date of Patent: July 2, 1996Assignee: Valmet CorporationInventors: Jorma Kinnunen, Silvo Mikkonen

Patent number: 5265812Abstract: The invention concerns a reeling drum for a paper or board machine or equivalent, onto which reeling drum a material web, in particular paper or board, is reeled. Axle journals have been fixed to the ends of the reeling drum in a conventional way by means of end joints. By means of the axle journals, the reeling drum is supported in a revolving manner on a machine frame by means of bearing means. According to the invention, the reeling drum is provided with articulation devices or the like for variation of the deflection of the reeling drum and for equalization of the pressure produced by the material web reeled ont the reeling drum. The reeling drum has an inner mantle supported on the machine frame revolvingly, and an outer mantle fitted on the inner mantle coaxially. A gap remains between the inner mantle and the outer mantle, the outer mantle being supported on the inner mantle by means of the articulation devices.Type: GrantFiled: February 7, 1992Date of Patent: November 30, 1993Assignee: Valmet Paper Machinery Inc.Inventors: Kari Holopainen, Juha Ehrola, Silvo Mikkonen
