  • Publication number: 20120286175
Abstract: The disclosed apparatus enables attachment to a sample to be excised from a frozen bulk sample, the transfer of the excised sample from the bulk sample to a separate cooled support structure by means of a manipulator tip that can be cooled and maintained at a temperature below that of vitreous ice and which provides both an active cooling path and cryogenic shielding to maintain the temperature of the excised sample below that of vitreous ice. The cryogenic shielding also helps minimize contamination of the cooled sample by condensation of volatile material. A method is disclosed for extracting a portion of a frozen sample, comprising attaching a thermally-isolated cooled manipulator tip to the sample with vapor deposition and removing a portion of the sample affixed to the tip without changing phase of the portion of the sample being removed, with a focused ion beam.

  • Publication number: 20120253696
Abstract: This invention relates to methods and apparatus for inspecting surfaces such as plates or pipe walls of magnetisable material using magnetic reluctance to gain data about the surfaces being inspected. In a preferred method, a magnetic circuit that passes through at least a magnetising unit and a portion of the surface to be inspected is created. The magnetic reluctance in the magnetic circuit is measured at one or more positions in the circuit. At least one of the measured magnetic reluctance values is incorporated into one or more algorithms. The result of the or each algorithm is recorded or displayed for each magnetic reluctance reading in association with information concerning the position of the or each magnetic reluctance reading on the surface.

  • Patent number: 8276835
Abstract: The design of the spray nozzle in an aerosol dispenser controls the characteristics of the spray that is produced. In a nozzle that comprises the elements of a multiplicity of inlet channels leading to a swirl chamber and an outlet orifice, the perception of wetness of a spray, such as an aqueous alcoholic deodorant spray, can be reduced by dimensioning the respective elements so that the sum of the widths of the inlet channels is less than the diameter of the swirl chamber and at least 1.5 times the diameter of the outlet orifice and the outlet orifice has a diameter of at least 0.3 mm together with the inlet channels being short, such as less than 0.5 mm. The new nozzle is especially suitable for spraying compositions having a low volatile organic carbon content and compositions comprising a significant proportion of water.

  • Patent number: 8250549
Abstract: A computer implemented tool is provided for assisting in the mapping of a computer program to a data processing apparatus wherein multiple physical instances of a logical variable in the computer program are required. A computer program is provided as the input to the tool which analyses the data flow of the program and identifies multiple physical instance requirement for logical variables. The tool adds mapping support commands, such as instantiation commands, Direct Memory Access (DMA) move commands and the like as necessary to support the mapping of the computer program to a data processing apparatus.

  • Patent number: 8190807
Abstract: A computer implemented tool is provided for assisting in the mapping of a computer program to an asymmetric multiprocessing apparatus 2 incorporating an asymmetric memory hierarchy formed of a plurality of memories 12, 14. An at least partial architectural description 22, 40 is provided as an input variable to the tool and used to infer missing annotations within a source computer program 24, such as which functions are to be executed by which execution mechanisms 4, 6, 8 and which variables are to be stored within which memories 12, 14. The tool also adds mapping support commands, such as cache flush commands, cache invalidate commands, DMA move commands and the like as necessary to support the mapping of the computer program to the asymmetric multiprocessing apparatus 2.

  • Patent number: 8185724
Abstract: An integrated circuit, and method of reviewing values of one or more signals occurring within that integrated circuit, are provided. The integrated circuit comprises processing logic for executing a program, and monitoring logic for reviewing values of one or more signals occurring within the integrated circuit as a result of execution of the program. The monitoring logic stores configuration data, which can be software programmed in relation to the signals to be monitored. Further, the monitoring logic makes use of a Bloom filter which, for a value to be reviewed, performs a hash operation on that value in order to reference the configuration data to determine whether that value is either definitely not a value within the range or is potentially a value within the range of values. If the value is determined to be within the set of values, then a trigger signal is generated which can be used to trigger a further monitoring process.

  • Patent number: 8160861
Abstract: The system comprises a component model for modelling aspects of the hardware component, and feature extraction logic for extending the component model to cause the component model, when executing, to output one or more features identifying execution behavior of the component model. A statistical model is then arranged to receive the one or more features output by the component model, and to generate the output dependent on one or more features. The component model may not explicitly model features that can be used to effectively predict values of the observable property, features that a statistical model depends on may still be captured in the underlying logic and implementation of the component model. By extracting features identifying execution behavior of the component model, this can provide a suitable input to the statistical model.
