  • Patent number: 9454325
Abstract: While a computer system is in operational state, a network interface controller (NIC) in the computer system may be operable to copy select data to a secondary storage device. The secondary storage device is accessible by the NIC while the computer system is in an offline state or not operational. The NIC may be operable to provide remote accessibility to the copy of the select data stored in the secondary storage device over a network while the computer system is in the offline state and the NIC is supplied with electrical power and active. While the computer system is in the operational state and whenever a change is made to the select data, the NIC is operable to replace the copy of the select data stored in the secondary storage device with an updated copy of the select data based on the change.

  • Publication number: 20150049052
Abstract: Often times, a touch-sensitive area of a touch-screen of a communication device is touched by a finger or a hand of a user. In some instances, a touch-based stylus of the present disclosure is available to the user. The user touches the touch-sensitive area of the communication device with the touch-based stylus. The communication device induces a current within the touch-based stylus. This induced current causes a voltage to accumulate within the passive object when touched by the user. This accumulated voltage transfers to the touch-sensitive area when the touch-based stylus touches the touch-sensitive area of the communication device. Thereafter, the communication device compares signal metrics of various regions of the touch-sensitive area to detect an instance and/or a location of the touch from the touch-based stylus.

  • Patent number: 8301918
Abstract: A Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) communication system dynamically provides power and data communications over a communications link. In an enterprise environment made up of one or more personal computing devices (e.g., personal or laptop computers), a switch determines an allocated amount of power to be supplied to each device. The system includes a switch, a power supply, and one or more personal computing devices having a PoE control module. The PoE control module can be part of, for example, a Power Source Equipment/Powered Device (PSE/PD) system or a LAN-On-Motherboard/Powered Device (LOM/PD) system. A method of dynamically providing power to personal computing devices includes determining the power requirements of each device based on one or more factors, which can include, for example, battery charge status, power load, power mode, etc., of each device. Various algorithms can be used to decide priority in providing power to the devices.

  • Patent number: 8301919
Abstract: A system and method for implementing fairness in the powering of computing devices in a power over Ethernet (PoE) application. Power supplies in a power sourcing equipment are often oversubscribed. This oversubscription can lead to starvation of certain computing devices that have power requests that are not granted relative to competing requests. A fairness consideration can be implemented to ensure that starvation conditions are avoided.

  • Patent number: 8285981
Abstract: Various embodiments are disclosed relating to remote network device provisioning. A method is disclosed, the method comprising discovering a network address associated with a device on a network based on a discovery response received in response to a discovery request provided to the device. One or more configurable boot options associated with the device may be determined based at least in part on the discovery response. One or more of the configurable boot options may be configured on the device, wherein, upon reboot of the device using the configured boot options, a software image is provided to the device.

  • Patent number: 8037328
Abstract: A Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) communication system dynamically provides power and data communications over a communications link. In a computing environment made up of one or more personal computing devices (PCD) and/or one or more powered devices (PD), power source equipment (PSE) determines an allocated amount of power to be supplied to each device. The personal computing devices include a unified LAN-On-Motherboard (LOM) that combines the functionality of a powered device (PD) controller of a conventional PD and a LOM of a conventional personal computing device into a single unified subsystem. The unified LOM includes a standard or universal interface between the LOM and PD controller so that different types of PD devices with differing functionality can be easily married to the LOM, without requiring significant hardware or software redesign.

  • Patent number: 8001399
Abstract: A system and method for secure communication for power over Ethernet (PoE) between a computing device and a switch. Various power management information can be used as inputs in a process for determining a power request/priority. This power management information can be communicated in Layer 2, Layer 3, or higher messaging during initial power allocation and ongoing power reallocation. Encryption of such messaging enables confidentiality, secure allocation processes, and prevention of denial of service attacks.

  • Publication number: 20110106977
Abstract: A network interface controller (NIC) in a computer device may provide host-independent secondary processing servicing. The secondary processing servicing may be provided by the NIC independent of networking operations performed by NIC, and may comprise performing applications and/or services typically performed in the computer device. The secondary processing servicing may be provided, and/or be activated when an operating system (OS), a virtual machine (VM), a service, and/or an application running in the computer device becomes unavailable, due to transitions to non-active and/or low-power or power saving states. In instances where the computer device is configured as a virtualized platform, comprising a plurality of VMs, the secondary processing servicing may be provided separately and/or independently to each of the plurality of VMs running in the computer device during the virtualization.

  • Patent number: 7746629
Abstract: Methods and systems for coupling a laptop or other portable or hand-held device to a docking system using an Ethernet Interface are disclosed and may comprise interfacing a portable computing device to a docking station using an Ethernet interface. Power may be applied from the docking station to the portable computing device via the Ethernet interface using power over Ethernet (POE) protocol. Audio, video, multimedia, control and/or data signals may be communicated between the docking station and the portable computing device via the Ethernet interface. Data exchanged between the portable computing device and the docking station may be encapsulated in Ethernet frames and tagged appropriately. The interface may be accomplished by directly coupling an Ethernet port of the docking station to an Ethernet port of the portable computing device, or by utilizing an Ethernet cable. The docking station may be an active or passive docking station.
