  • Patent number: 5422469
Abstract: The laser diode of an optical scanning system is located in a separate unit and light therefrom carried to a remote scan head via an optical fiber. This reduces the size and weight of the scan head and reduces the temperature sensitivity of the scan head. The scan head may include an optical sensor for detecting light reflected from scanned symbols. Alternatively, the separate unit may house the sensor, and the same fiber or an additional fiber will collect the reflected light and transmit that light back to the sensor. A portion of the optical fiber is attached to the optical scan unit such that the first end is free to vibrate within the optical scan unit in response to a mechanical force applied to the optical scan unit by a user, for example by shaking or striking the scan unit.

  • Patent number: 5410140
Abstract: To reduce the size and weight of an optical scanner, the present invention provides a mirrorless beam scanning unit wherein the light emitter itself moves back and forth. In the preferred embodiments the light emitter is a visible light diode (VLD) mounted on the axis of a rotatable shaft. The VLD emits light in a direction perpendicular to the axis of the shaft. A lever arm attached to the shaft and an induction motor for moving the arm repeatedly rotate the shaft back and forth through a small rotational arc. The mirrorless scanner is mounted on a finger sized ring. This allows a user to wear the miniature optical scanner on a finger. A separate unit houses the other components of the scanning system, such as the analog signal processing circuitry, digitizer, decoder and any necessary interface to a data processing system. The separate unit can be worn on the user's belt or in a pocket, and a cable connects the separate unit to the ring mounted scanner.

  • Patent number: 5404001
Abstract: The laser diode of an optical scanning system is located in a separate unit and light therefrom carried to a remote scan head via an optical fiber. This reduces the size and weight as well as temperature sensitivity of the scan head. The separate unit may include an optical sensor for detecting light reflected from scanned symbols. If the separate unit houses the sensor, the same fiber or an additional fiber will collect the reflected light and transmit that light back to the sensor. An electromagnetic system produces a scanning motion of the beam emitted by the scan head where the optical fiber is attached to a magnet.

  • Patent number: 5374817
Abstract: To reduce the size and weight of an optical scanner, the present invention provides a mirrorless beam scanning unit. A flexible support structure, such as one or more strips of mylar, movably mounts the objective lens in front of the light emitter. The objective lens is laterally reciprocated in response to a motive force, for example as might be applied by a combination of a permanent magnet coupled to the objective lens and a fixedly mounted electromagnet driven by an alternating current signal. Reciprocation of the objective lens during emission of light by the light emitter causes the light to scan a surface, such as a surface bearing a bar code label.

  • Patent number: 5280165
Abstract: A scan pattern generator for use in a bar code reader which uses a single drive (one coil and one magnet) to produce movement of a reflective surface so as to produce an oscillating movement of the surface in two directions, thereby forming a raster-type scanning pattern when a light beam is reflected off the surface.

  • Patent number: 5168149
Abstract: High speed scanning arrangements in scanners for reading bar code symbols by oscillating a scanner component mounted on an arm of an asymmetrical U-shaped spring in single or multi-axis scan patterns.
