  • Patent number: 8227386
Abstract: A method of making at least one nanographene layer is disclosed herein. The method includes selecting X hydrocarbon precursor and Y hydrogen gas (H2) such that a ratio of X/Y ranges from 0.5 to 1, the hydrocarbon precursor including at least one of CH4, C2H2 or C3H8. The method further includes submitting the hydrocarbon precursor to chemical vapor deposition using the hydrogen gas and argon gas (Ar). As a result, i) the hydrocarbon precursor reacts with the hydrogen gas and argon gas (Ar) according to the following reaction: X hydrocarbon precursor+YH2+ZAr?2X graphene+(Y+2X)H2+ZAr, where Z ranges from 5*(X+Y) to 10*(X+Y), and ii) the hydrocarbon precursor decomposes and self-assembles to form the at least one nanographene layer.

  • Patent number: 8109247
Abstract: A materials combination for a camshaft and follower of an engine valve train provides excellent wear resistance. The camshaft or camshaft lobes are made from a malleable cast iron and the cam followers are made from a carbonitrided 52100 or 4130 steel to provide excellent wear resistance equivalent to diamond-like coatings at greatly reduced cost.

  • Patent number: 8101286
Abstract: A multi-layer coating for a smooth contact surface of a clutch plate and a method for manufacturing the same have been developed. This coating can help reduce the prevalence of clutch shudder, noise, and plate wear that is often encountered in a friction-disc clutch mechanism found in a motor vehicle's powertrain. The multi-layer coating may comprise a relatively soft base layer and one or more relatively hard particle layers overlying the base layer. This combination of layers can help provide stable friction characteristics and thermal properties between clutch plate surfaces. One or more optional bonding layers may also be provided between any two adjacent layers to improve the adherent bonding therebetween. At least some of the layers of the multi-layer coating may be applied by a HVO/AF thermal spray procedure.

  • Patent number: 6639685
Abstract: A contour measurement system determines three dimensional surface information of an object using a projection moiré technique to obtain a single fringe pattern that is analyzed using a phase-shift image processing method. A grating is projected onto the object and the reflected fringe pattern is recorded by a camera and stored digitally as an array of pixels. An estimated fringe spacing is then determined for each pixel. Using the estimated fringe spacings, four phase-shifted fringe patterns are generated by correlation integration and then used in a phase calculation to obtain wrapped phase information for the object. This phase information is then unwrapped and normalized, producing a set of data points representative of the unwrapped phase information. Noise suppression using pattern reconstruction and smoothing can be utilized at this point to improve the signal to noise ratio.
