Abstract: The present disclosure concerns the treatment of a patient with autoimmune disease, including AIDS, by neutralizing, removing or inhibiting different types of interferons, tumor necrosis factor, HLA class II antigens, IgE, and other pathological factors and/or their receptors, as well as neutralizing, removing or inhibiting autoantibodies, including antibodies to target cells, CD4 cells and DNA. Treatment comprises administration of an autoimmune inhibitor, or extracorporeal exposure of the patient's fluid to an immunosorbent comprising an autoimmune inhibitor, followed by return of the treated fluid to the patient; or it comprises a combined therapy involving extracorporeal immunosorption in conjunction with the administration of an autoimmune inhibitor.

Abstract: The present invention relates to allergy vaccines and methods of treating and/or preventing asthma, and allergic conditions. The invention is based on the discovery that inhibiting the ligand/receptor interactions involving, e.g., IgE, IL-3, IL-4, IL-5, IL-6, IL-10, IL-13, interferon-alpha, histamine, leukotriene, and their respective receptors, inhibits production of IgE thereby treating or preventing such diseases or conditions. Competitive inhibition of such receptor/ligand interactions is accomplished by immunizing a human or veterinary patient with the interleukin, interferon-alpha, histamine, leukotriene, their receptors, in any combination. Also, the invention relates to inhibiting receptor/ligand interactions involved in IgE production by competitively inhibiting such interactions by administering antibodies to the ligands, receptors, or both, as well as by administering analogs of the receptors (e.g., soluble receptors not associated with a cell).

Abstract: Interferon is produced in-vitro from whole blood, obtainable from animals or humans including blood from corpses or retroplacental blood, in a simplified non-critical process preferably carried out in a sterile system of interconnected plastic bags. The blood is stabilized and innoculated with an interferon inducer before culturing in an incubator. This results in interferon containing blood useful directly for transfusions or further processable to obtain a variety of therapeutic interferon containing preparations including plasma, serum and albumin in accordance with disclosed phases of this invention. Interferon carrying plasma is thus separated and treated further to isolate interferon carrying serum or albumin, if desired. In-vivo innoculation to produce antibodies before taking blood provides improved disease fighting characteristics in the derived product.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for the treatment of autoimmune diseases and allergy (hypersensitivity of immediate type). The apparatus ulitizes an absorption system to absorb interferon from whole blood, from plasma, or from plasma with leukocytes. When plasma or plasma with leukocytes is to be treated, the apparatus includes a separator for separating the plasma or plasma with keukocytes from the whole blood. Preferably, the separator also separates lymphocytes from the whole blood. Blood from a patient's circulation system is pumped either directly to an absorbent system or to the separator and then to the absorbent system. The absorbent system includes a sorbent that is designed to selectively absorb interferon from the blood, the plasma, or the plasma with leukocytes. Alternatively, the absorbent system utilizes a combined sorbent having a first component that absorbs interferon and a second component that abosrbs or removes antoantibodies.
