  • Publication number: 20170336861
Abstract: Introduced herein are various techniques for displaying virtual and augmented reality content via a head-mounted display (HMD). The techniques can be used to improve the effectiveness of the HMD, as well as the general experience and comfort of users of the HMD. A binocular HMD system may present visual stabilizers to each eye that allow users to more easily fuse the digital content seen by each eye. In some embodiments the visual stabilizers are positioned within the digital content so that they converge to a shared location when viewed by a user, while in other embodiments the visual stabilizers are mapped to different locations within the user's field of view (e.g., peripheral areas) and are visually distinct from one another. These techniques allow the user to more easily fuse the digital content, thereby decreasing the eye fatigue and strain typically experienced when viewing virtual or augmented reality content.

  • Patent number: 9823745
Abstract: Input data is obtained. A viewer's eye disposition is determined, and the viewer's field of view determined therefrom. First and second portions of the field of view are defined considering a contextual factor, and visual output data is generated from the input data considering the contextual factor. The output data is displayed on a first region of a see-through near-eye display so as to appear in the first portion of said field of view. The output data is excluded from a second region of the display so as not to obstruct the second portion of the field of view. Shifts in eye disposition and field of view are determined. The first and second display regions are updated to maintain the correspondence, such that the output data does not perceptibly change responsive to the shift in the field of view of the viewer.

  • Patent number: 9804669
Abstract: Introduced herein are various techniques for displaying virtual and augmented reality content via a head-mounted display (HMD). The techniques can be used to improve the effectiveness of the HMD, as well as the general experience and comfort of users of the HMD. An HMD may increase and/or decrease the resolution of certain areas in digital content that is being viewed to more accurately mimic a user's high resolution and low resolution fields of view. For example, the HMD may monitor the user's eye movement to identify a focal point of the user's gaze, and then increase the resolution in an area surrounding the focal point, decrease the resolution elsewhere, or both. Predictive algorithms could also be employed to identify which areas are likely to be the subject of the user's gaze in the future, which allows the HMD to present the regionally-focused content in real-time.

  • Patent number: 9775780
Abstract: Various embodiments relate to systems and methods for monitoring adherence to a medication regimen through the use of a smart medication container. The container can include an electronic display that presents relevant information, such as dosage and/or medication information, instructions, user information, messages, notifications, and device information (e.g., battery status, network connectivity status). A pair of conductive elements positioned on either side of the container's opening can be configured to continually measure capacitance in order to identify when contents (e.g., pills) leave the container. More than one pair of conductive elements may be used to improve accuracy and reduce the effects of noise. A processor is able to analyze the capacitance data and determine whether medication has been dispensed from the container and, if so, how much medication was dispensed. A computer system can then compare the results to a planned medication regimen to determine a state of compliance.

  • Publication number: 20170156586
Abstract: Various embodiments relate to systems and methods for performing eye examinations using an HMD that is able to present an image to each eye individually and then to both eyes simultaneously. Because the HMD, rather than a patient, controls conditions (e.g., glare, brightness) during the examination, test results are more likely to be accurate and reliable. In some embodiments, the HMD employs voice recognition to replicate the conversational exchange that would typically occur between the patient and the ophthalmologist or optometrist. The HMD may also be configured to change the visual environment experienced by the patient during testing. Further yet, the HMD, or another distinct computing system, may be configured to identify abnormal test results in real-time and, in some embodiments, the examination is modified accordingly. For example, tests scheduled to be performed during the examination can be modified or removed and new tests can be added.

  • Patent number: 9665987
Abstract: A machine-implemented method includes obtaining input data and generating output data. The status of at least one contextual factor is determined and compared with a standard. If the status meets the standard, a transformation is applied to the output data. The output data is then outputted to the viewer. Through design and/or selection of contextual factors, standards, and transformations, output data may be selectively outputted to viewers in a context-suitable fashion, e.g. on a head mounted display the viewer's central vision may be left unobstructed while the viewer walks, drives, etc. An apparatus includes at least one sensor that senses a contextual factor. A processor determines the status of the contextual factor, determines if the status meets a standard, generates output data, and applies a transformation to the output data if the status meets the standard. A display outputs the output data to the viewer.
