    Abstract: Disclosed herein are semi-solid electrolyte systems based on layered clay materials capable of higher water intercalation for high-voltage aqueous zinc-ion batteries. In alternate embodiments, an electrolyte system for aqueous zinc-ion batteries is based on a bentonite (BT) clay or a laponite clay (LP) and methods for intercalation. Additionally described herein are electrochemical cells including the semi-solid electrolyte. In alternate embodiments, the semi-solid electrolyte is also used as a separator in the electrochemical cell.
