Patent number: 11009363Abstract: The present invention provides a method of determining a route between two locations in a navigation device by calculating the cost of paths between the two locations using a cost function. The cost function applies different weighting factors for the same type of attribute to line segments when the line segments are located in different areas of a map. As such, when the cost of a path is being assessed, the same type of attribute may be associated with different levels of penalty or bonus in different areas. This means that the route determined is less likely to avoid line segments that have a certain negative attribute in areas where the attribute has a less adverse affect.Type: GrantFiled: December 31, 2010Date of Patent: May 18, 2021Assignee: TOMTOM NAVIGATION B.V.Inventors: Sjoerd Aben, Teun De Haas, Erik Thomassen, Breght Boschker

Publication number: 20140114575Abstract: A method of operating a navigation apparatus is provided. A visual or audible navigation instruction, warning or alert is provided to a user via the apparatus. The navigation instruction, warning or alert is enhanced in a continuous or stepped manner as a given location to which the instruction, warning or alert relates is approached. The instruction may be an instruction regarding a manoeuvre to be performed at a junction in order to follow a calculated route. The instruction is visually enhanced by increasing its size as the current location of the apparatus becomes closer to the junction to more readily engage the attention of the user, and to facilitate interpretation of the instruction. Alternatively a warning regarding a safety camera may be increased in size as the camera is approached.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 30, 2010Publication date: April 24, 2014Inventors: Michel Alders, Jasper-Michiel Van Hemert, Magdalena Bukowska, Ana Vadillo Palacio, Sandra Geul, Jeroen Bennink, Sjoerd Aben, Hendrik Ziezold

Publication number: 20110224901Abstract: A navigation apparatus includes a processing resource that is operably coupled to a data store including digital map data. A location determination unit is also provided and capable of determining a location. In at least one embodiment, the navigation apparatus receives information from at least a vehicle: steering sensor for sensing an angular position of the vehicle steering control. Information relating to the sensed parameters is logged by the navigation apparatus while driving. Upon subsequent uploading of the information to a server, the information is analysed statistically, and combined with similar information obtained from other navigation devices. The statistical analysis enables supplementary road information to be derived, such as road lane width; Such supplementary road information is added to the digital map to facilitate greater safety awareness and route planning.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 8, 2008Publication date: September 15, 2011Inventors: Sjoerd Aben, Erik Thomassen, Teun De Hass
