  • Patent number: 8660564
Abstract: A system and method for managing voice communication between devices located within a local network and other devices. The present invention permits the managing and selective routing of voice communications over VoIP systems, circuit-based cellular systems and public switched telephone network systems based upon predefined criteria such as Quality of Service (QoS) considerations, geographic considerations, cost considerations and other factors.

  • Publication number: 20080261594
Abstract: A system and method for complete message delivery to a multi-mode communication device is presented. The communication device is adaptable to communicate with one or more carrier networks and one or more data networks. When a new message is received for the communication device, a message notification is sent to the device via a first network. The communication device parses the message notification and retrieves the complete message via a second network. Alternatively, the message notification may be delivered and the complete message may be retrieved via the same network.

  • Patent number: 6829481
Abstract: A multi-mode mobile station performs an inter-system handoff between systems, qualified by the presence or absence of a preferred wireless communication network in a roaming lookup table stored and maintained in either mobile station memory or with the network controller. In one embodiment the accurate location of the mobile unit is determined by a global position fix, after which a coverage map is consulted to verify the availability of a preferred network before initiating a background scan. In other embodiments, a learning function creates habit profiles of a subscriber's regular behavior upon which the system intelligently initiates scanning for a preferred network.

  • Patent number: 6556817
Abstract: A wireless communication system employs a method and apparatus for selectively communicating in the wireless communication system based on varying time incremental costs of communication. A communication unit (116) receives a transmission (118) from the system infrastructure of the wireless system, wherein the transmission indicates a time incremental cost of future communications as temporarily established by the system infrastructure. Responsive to receiving the transmission, the communication unit determines whether the received time incremental cost is acceptable to a user of the communication unit (e.g., whether the received cost is less than or equal to a previously stored desired cost or whether, after displaying the received cost to the user, the user has indicated his or her acceptance of the cost).
