  • Patent number: 8712473
Abstract: A system and method for seamlessly increasing download throughput in a wireless wide area network (WWAN) device is herein disclosed. Remote file servers frequently impose per connection transfer limits upon host devices that are requesting files for download. In order to bypass these limitations, a WWAN device acting as a proxy server can replace a single file request with a series of independent requests over multiple connections, each requesting a separate portion of the original file. The blocks of requested data can then be reassembled at the WWAN device before being transferred to the device requesting the file. A user of the requesting device can therefore benefit from increased download rates, yet without having to download or install any additional software within the requesting device.

  • Patent number: 8452858
Abstract: A Universal Serial Bus (USB) modem/Wireless Wide Area Network (WWAN) device is provided that when connected to a host device, presents itself as an Ethernet endpoint to the host device, without requiring additional software/drivers to be downloaded to the host device. Embedded in the USB modem/WWAN device are various modules that provide functionality allowing either automatic connection to the Internet or redirection to a local Web User Interface (UI) that a user may employ to configure the USB modem/WWAN device and/or manually connect to the Internet. Additionally, the USB modem/WWAN device employs predetermined rules to determine whether or not/how the redirection occurs, including in scenarios where wireless connectivity to the Internet is unavailable.

  • Publication number: 20120208478
Abstract: An apparatus comprises a radio frequency (RF) signal source; and a controller configured to adjust power of the RF signal source based on a detected parameter. In one embodiment, the apparatus further comprises a proximity sensor configured to determine proximity of the RF signal source to live tissue, and the detected parameter is the proximity determined by the proximity sensor. The RF signal source may be an RF antenna. The controller may be configured to reduce the power of the RF signal source when the proximity is less than a predetermined threshold value. The controller may be configured to reduce the power to a predetermined reduced power level.

  • Patent number: 8170554
Abstract: A system and method for complete message delivery to a multi-mode communication device is presented. The communication device is adaptable to communicate with one or more carrier networks and one or more data networks. When a new message is received for the communication device, a message notification is sent to the device via a first network. The communication device parses the message notification and retrieves the complete message via a second network. Alternatively, the message notification may be delivered and the complete message may be retrieved via the same network.

  • Patent number: 8050686
Abstract: In a wireless communication network having remote receivers (subscriber units) communicating through base units in a service area, each of the base units servicing a cell area encompasses one or more identifiable zones which can be occupied by receivers. According to the invention, at least one measure of the spatial size of the cell is reported to a receiver communicating with a base station, for use in location specific applications. The measure can be a size category, an average diameter or another measure, such as a shape and orientation of the cell, a boundary apex, and a boundary line of the cell. The base station coordinates are conventionally available to the receiver. By providing a measure of size, the receiver can resolve its zone or location to a coarse or low level of resolution. The zone occupied by the receiver is at least within the cell and the size of the cell and location of the base station are now known.
