    Abstract: An system and method for cooling of electronic equipment, for example a computer system, in a subsurface environment including a containment vessel in at least partial contact with subsurface liquid or solid material. The containment vessel may be disposed in a variety of subsurface environments, including boreholes, man-made excavations, subterranean caves, as well as ponds, lakes, reservoirs, oceans, or other bodies of water. The containment vessel may be installed with a subsurface configuration allowing for human access for maintenance and modification. Cooling is achieved by one or more fluids circulating inside and/or outside the containment vessel, with a variety of configurations of electronic devices disposed within the containment vessel. The circulating fluid(s) may be cooled in place by thermal conduction or by active transfer of the fluid(s) out of the containment vessel to an external heat exchange mechanism, then back into the containment vessel.

    Abstract: Engine driven power supplies with output reduction are disclosed. An example engine-driven welding power supply for providing a welding-type output includes an engine, a generator mechanically linked to the engine, power conditioning circuitry, and a controller. The generator generates output power based on mechanical input from the engine. The power conditioning circuitry converts the output power from the generator to welding-type power based on a commanded output. The controller reduce an output of the power conditioning circuitry from the commanded output by an amount proportional to a difference between a speed of the engine and a commanded engine speed while monitoring the difference, decreases the output in response to determining that the reduction in the output does not result in an acceleration in the engine speed, and increases the welding-type output as the difference between the speed of the engine and the commanded engine speed decreases.

    Abstract: In one embodiment employing a vertical draw apparatus, a method of crystallization growth on a substrate surface of a substrate having a substrate material includes: mounting the substrate to a sample holder with the substrate surface facing a liquid surface of a reservoir disposed in a chamber that provides an ambient temperature; seeding the substrate surface with seed droplets; lowering the substrate surface to the liquid surface of the reservoir; independently controlling a temperature of the substrate and a temperature of the reservoir to produce a temperature difference between the substrate and the reservoir over a period of time for crystallization growth; and retracting the substrate surface from the liquid surface of the reservoir at a draw rate. The draw rate and the temperature difference are selected to grow polycrystalline laminate on the substrate surface. Consistent polycrystalline columnar microstructures are formed with appropriate seeding of the substrate surface.
