    Abstract: A device and a method are provided for generating IPv6 addresses from a vehicle identification number VIN. The method carried out by the communication controller of the vehicle is used inside the vehicle to generate unique local IPv6 addresses for the on-board devices. The method also enables the generation of IPv6 addresses for communication to the outside of the vehicle.
