Abstract: The present invention is a method introducing the sublingual placement of statin drugs whose names include: Fluvastatin, Atorvastatin, Lovastatin, Pravastatin and Simvastatin for heart related and other vascular emergencies. Current research challenges are developing many new derivatives and new classes of these HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors, which alter the biosynthesis of cholesterol. This method applies these medications (statin drugs) in a form such as sublingual (under the tongue) for rapid absorption and immediate high blood levels similar to that of nitroglycerin. The advantage of this method is that it will benefit those who are stricken with strokes and heart attacks by therefore saving lives and costs of medical care.

The body is affixed vertically on the long handle of a tenaculum or other similar elongated handles of surgical clasping instruments. The instrument includes a pair of upper and lower blades that open to spread apart the area being examined so that a surgical tool can be inserted therein. A second pair of lateral blades are fixedly mounted between the spaced pair of upper and lower blades. The instruments can be eliminated from the area of view by allowing the surgical tool to pass up into a gate while maintaining the spread-apart condition of the area being examined. The blades can then be restored to their closed position after the tool is withdrawn. The gate may have a plurality of notches for accommodating differing surgical tools.

The instrument includes a scissors-like main body portion having a plurality of blades that open to spread apart the area being examined so that a surgical tool can be inserted therein. The instrument can be withdrawn or moved out of the area of view by allowing the surgical tool to pass through a gate formed between the spread-apart blades while maintaining the spread-apart condition of the area being examined. The blades can then be restored to their closed position after the tool is withdrawn.

Abstract: Apparatus for inserting tubes of varying sizes, such as catheter tubes, into a patient including mating upper and lower needle portions, the lower portion being flattened on the bottom surface for abutment with the body of the patient with tabs extending outwardly on both sides of the mating portions also adapted to abut against the body of the patient. The two mating portions are removably secured together so that the mating needle halves form an elongated cylindrical needle extending outwardly form one side of the secured portions and the mating portions forming a slot on the other side for receiving the luer adapter of a stylet therein.

Abstract: Apparatus for preventing breakage of bags of tracheal tubes comprising a unitary one-piece molded unit having an elongated generally cylindrical longitudinally split main body portion terminating at one end in a restricted opening and at the other end in an open end having an elongated strip extending from one side thereof forming a handle. The handle may be an endless ring connected to the main body portion having its central axis coaxially aligned with the central axis of the main body portion. The main body portion slips over the bag, which is normally deflated, of a tracheal tube prior to insertion of the bag into an incised area or into instruments, the ring providing a handle for removing the apparatus after insertion of the tube to a predetermined depth in the patient thereby preventing breakage of the bag during insertion.

The device includes a holder for a curved stylet or a flexible tube and curved stylet combination which holder includes a two piece curved needle attached to a pair of handles, each handle including one part of the needle, which handles can be spread apart for insertion of a curved stylet or tube and curved stylet combination between the needle parts. When it is desired to remove the device from the patient, one of the handles having its needle part can be removed from the other handle having its needle part without disturbing the tube or stylet alone held between the needle parts. In this manner, sutures can be easily made in a chest or drainage effected in carrying out a thoracostomy.

Abstract: An improved surgical device for performing emergency cricothyrotomies and tracheotomies. The device includes a holder for a stylet or tube which holder includes a two-part needle attached to a pair of handles, each handle including one part of the needle, which handles can be spread apart for insertion of a tube or stylet between the needle parts. The tube or stylet is then held between the needle parts. When it is desired to remove the device from the patient, one of the handles having its needle part can be removed from the other handle having its needle part without disturbing the tube or stylet held between the needle parts. In this manner, sutures can be easily made around a chest or throat opening in which the device has been inserted since only the tube remains in place.
