Patent number: 6344041Abstract: This is an artificial occlusion kit for implanting and retaining an artificial occlusion device in a body space adjacent to and extending from a body lumen in a mammal. The includes at least one occlusion device and a retaining device for blocking the migration of the occlusion device out of the occlusion site. The retaining device is radially expandable at a retaining site adjacent the body space to be occluded to a diameter that is sufficient to engage the body lumen wall at the retaining site and form a barrier across the entrance zone of the body space to be occluded. The expanded retaining device also forms a lumen for flow through body lumen at the retaining site. At least one semi-penetrable space may also be provided in the retaining device, allowing introduction of occlusion devices into the body space to be occluded, but preventing subsequent migration of the occlusion devices out of the body space.Type: GrantFiled: October 26, 2001Date of Patent: February 5, 2002Inventors: David Kupiecki, Clifford Teoh, Hong Doan, Son M. Patent number: 6214022Abstract: A plurality of embodiments of a distal perfusion device are disclosed, which device facilitates anastomosis constructions by maintaining a dry anastomosis site while simultaneously maintaining blood flow distally in the blood vessel to prevent ischemia and reduce overall patient trauma. The perfusion device is configured for installation into a blood vessel such as a left anterior descending coronary artery through an incision therein, to which is to be grafted a distal end of a blood vessel such as an internal mammary artery. The device includes a central member of selected configuration and material, terminating at either end thereof in respective selectively tapered end members. A lumen extending through the central member and end members, and selected perforations in the end members, maintain blood flow through the perfusion device.Type: GrantFiled: April 28, 1999Date of Patent: April 10, 2001Assignee: Cardiothoracic Systems, Inc.Inventors: Charles S. Taylor, Alfredo R. Cantu, Son M. Gia, Jeff A. Krolic, Robert G. Matheny, Amr Salahieh, Ivan Sepetka

Patent number: 6042563Abstract: An improved method and apparatus for occluding a blood vessel is shown and described. A cannula adapted for insertion through a wall of a blood vessel is provided with an expandable member on a distal end which when expanded, substantially fills a cross-sectional annular area of the lumen of the blood vessel. An external clamp is coupled to the cannula and aligned with the expandable member, such that when the clamp is engaged, it moves the annular region of the blood vessel into contact with the inflatable member, the inflatable member and clamp thereby working in cooperation to occlude the blood vessel. The cannula may further be provided with a plurality of lumens extending through the cannula to corresponding openings in a distal end of the cannula, thereby allowing the perfusion of different fluids into the lumen of the blood vessel, both upstream and downstream of the internal occluding member, as well as the venting of fluid from the lumen of the blood vessel.Type: GrantFiled: March 27, 1998Date of Patent: March 28, 2000Assignee: Cardiothoracic Systems, Inc.Inventors: Dwight P. Patent number: 6004338Abstract: This is an implantable vaso-occlusive device. It is typically a vaso-occlusive coil comprised of a primary helically wound coil which may then be wound into a secondary shape. Central to the invention is the use of a stretch-resisting member fixedly attached within at least a portion of the primary coil. The stretch-resisting member may be formed into coil tips at the ends of the coil by melting the polymeric fibers or alloys or by attaching the fibers with a glue. This stretch-resisting member is for the primary purpose of preventing stretching of the coil during movement of that coil, e.g., by retrieval or repositioning after deployment. The device typically has a self-forming secondary shape made from a pre-formed primary linear helically wound coil, although it need not have the secondary form. External fibers may be attached to the device and affixed to the pre-formed linear member to increase . The vaso-occlusive member may be also be covered with a fibrous braid.Type: GrantFiled: August 11, 1998Date of Patent: December 21, 1999Assignee: Target Therapeutics Inc.Inventors: Christopher G. M. Patent number: 6001092Abstract: A vasoocclusive device in the form of a coil for placement in the vasculature of an animal to form thrombus in a selected site such as an aneurysm or AVM. The device involves a primary coil form having thrombogenic fibers placed on the coil in a specified fashion. The coil will pass through the lumen of a vascular catheter in the primary coil form and evolve into a convoluted or complex secondary form when ejected from the catheter's distal end. The fibers are attached to the coil and cooperate with the coil so that upon ejection from the catheter, the convoluted coil forms a shape in which the central region or secondary coil form center that contains the majority of these fibers.Type: GrantFiled: August 12, 1997Date of Patent: December 14, 1999Assignee: Target Therapeutics, Inc.Inventors: Gregory E. Mirigian, Nga Thi Van, Son M. Gia

Patent number: 5976162Abstract: This is a micro-vaso-occlusive device intended generally for occlusion of small arteries located distally in the vasculature. The device is made up of a binder, often radio-opaque, which may be short in length by comparison to the length of the included thrombogenic fibers. The fibers form the other portion of the device. At least one end of the device includes a solid but comparatively soft end typically made of a molten mass of the fibers. The micro device may have multiple binder sections. The fibers may be straight, looped, or tufted.Type: GrantFiled: March 13, 1998Date of Patent: November 2, 1999Assignee: Target Therapeutics, Inc.Inventors: Hanh Doan, Kim Nguyen, Hong Doan, Son M. Patent number: 5868754Abstract: This is a device for capturing and removing bodies or articles from within a vessel, such vessels as may be found in the vascular system or the genital urinary tract. It includes a core wire which has attached at its distal end a plurality of fibers. The core wire may be introduced through a catheter to a selected site and further advanced and "twirled" to engage the offending foreign body. The retriever and its targeted foreign body are then withdrawn using the catheter.Type: GrantFiled: June 12, 1996Date of Patent: February 9, 1999Assignee: Target Therapeutics, Inc.Inventors: Marc-Alan Levine, Son M. Patent number: 5853418Abstract: This is an implantable vaso-occlusive device. It is typically a vaso-occlusive coil comprising a primary helically wound coil which may then be wound into a secondary shape. Central to the invention is the use of a stretch-resisting member extending through the lumen formed, which stretch-resisting member is fixedly attached, directly or indirectly, to the coil in at least two locations. The stretch resisting member is preferably somewhat loose within the interior of the lumen so to prevent the coil from collapsing, binding, and therefore stiffening during passage of turns through the human body. The coil should bend easily. In some variations of the invention, the stretch-resisting member may be formed into coil tips at the ends of the coil using simple equipment such as soldering irons or the like. The tips are typically of the same diameter as is the coil body itself. This stretch-resisting member is for the primary purpose of preventing stretching of the coil during movement of that coil, e.g.Type: GrantFiled: January 7, 1997Date of Patent: December 29, 1998Assignee: Target Therapeutics, Inc.Inventors: Christopher G.M.
