    Abstract: A separator for a rechargeable battery can include a porous polymer sheet having a first major surface and an opposing second major surface and, advantageously, a functional coating on one or both major surfaces. Such a coating can include a lithium ion generating compound such as a mixture of Li3N and another metal nitride; or a lithium metal oxide; a lithium transition metal phosphate; or any mixture thereof. In addition, the porous polymer sheet can include a lithium metal coating or an alloy of lithium metal coating. Such separators are useful in rechargeable lithium ion battery cells.
