  • Patent number: 7993778
Abstract: A lithium ion secondary battery having a safety vent responsive to temperature and pressure. The lithium ion secondary battery includes an electrode assembly having a positive electrode plate, a separator, and a negative electrode plate which are simultaneously wound and laminated, and positive and negative electrode leads extending outward from the positive and negative electrode plates, respectively. A can containing the electrode assembly and having an opening; and a cap plate coupled to the opening of the can, wherein an electrode terminal extends through and is coupled to the center of the cap plate with a gasket interposed therein, the negative electrode lead being connected to the electrode terminal, the positive electrode lead being connected to the cap plate, a coupling hole being formed on the cap plate, and a safety vent adapted to soften at a predetermined temperature is coupled to the coupling hole.

  • Patent number: 7931980
Abstract: An electrode assembly is adapted to prevent the separator from contracting due to heat that is generated near the electrode tab during overcharging, over-discharging, or in the case of an internal short circuit. The electrode assembly also prevents an additional short circuit between the electrode plates. A rechargeable battery that comprises the electrode assembly is also provided. The present invention prevents the electrode tab from being short-circuited due to increased heat generation during overcharging or in the case of a short circuit, thus improving the safety of the rechargeable battery.

  • Patent number: 7754378
Abstract: In a secondary battery having an electrolyte injection hole having improved sealing structure to improve the safety of the can-type secondary battery and to prevent the electrolyte from leaking, the electrolyte injection hole is sealed by welding the sealing plate on top of the cap plate so that the electrolyte is prevented from flowing into the welded portion. Since no fine gap is created in the electrolyte injection hole, the electrolyte is prevented from flowing into the welded portion due to a capillary phenomenon and no pin hole caused by the electrolyte is formed in the welded portion.
