Publication number: 20090234937Abstract: A communication system comprises a configuration manager which includes an optimizer for performing a Radio Access Network (RAN) optimization process. An optimization characteristic for the RAN optimization process and operational data for a plurality of remote terminals is determined, and based on this information a grouping processor determines a plurality of groups of remote terminals. A policy processor determines an operational policy for each of the groups in response to the optimization characteristic and the operational data and a policy distributor transmits the operational policy of each group to at least the remote terminals in the group. Each remote terminal then continues to operate in accordance with the operational policy of the group to which the remote terminal belongs. The invention may typically allow improved performance and specifically may allow operation to be adapted to the specific optimization processes being performed.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 17, 2009Publication date: September 17, 2009Applicant: MOTOROLA, INC.Inventors: Soodesh Buljore, Matthew J. Publication number: 20080311866Abstract: A radio communication system (100) transmits performance requirement notifications defining performance requirements for the operation of a radio equipment (101). The performance requirements are received from a regulation body responsible for certifying the operation of the communication system (100). The reconfigurable radio equipment (101) comprises a reconfigurable radio element (303) and a secure certification processor (301). The secure certification processor (301) comprises a monitoring processor (325) which monitors compliance of the reconfigurable radio element (303) with a set of performance requirements. A validation processor (321) verifies the performance requirement notification and a requirements processor (323) updates the performance requirements in response to the notifications if these are valid.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 18, 2007Publication date: December 18, 2008Applicant: MOTOROLA, INC.Inventors: Pierre Roux, Soodesh Buljore

Publication number: 20080288630Abstract: A device, such as a mobile phone, comprises a management tree store (101) which stores an Open Mobile Alliance Device Management (OMA DM) management tree. A tree processor (103) is arranged to detect a change associated with at least a first node of the management tree. A backup node processor (107) adds a first backup node as a child node of the first node in response to the detection of the change. The backup node comprises backup data representing a setting for the first node prior to the change. A restore processor (109) is arranged to restore at least part of the management tree to a setting prior to the change in response to a retrieval of the backup data from the first backup node. The invention may facilitate/improve backup and restore operations for OMA DM devices.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 18, 2007Publication date: November 20, 2008Applicant: MOTOROLA, INC.Inventors: Vincent Merat, Alan B. Patent number: 7254184Abstract: A method of closed-loop multi-stream wireless communication between a transmitter (1) comprising a transmit antenna array of N transmit antenna elements and a receiver (3) comprising a receive antenna array (4) of M receive antenna elements, wherein a plurality of distinct data steams (x1 X2) are transmitted from the transmit antenna array to the receive antenna array and the data streams are weighted by respective complex weighting matrices before being applied to the transit antenna array. The distinct data steams are separated and estimated at the receiver. The distinct data streams (x1 xG) are applied to respective sub-groups (6,7) of the transmit antenna elements at least one of which comprises a plurality of the transmit antenna elements each of the sub-groups comprising at least Nd transmit antenna elements, where M is greater than or equal to (N/Nd).Type: GrantFiled: April 18, 2003Date of Patent: August 7, 2007Assignee: Motorola, Inc.Inventors: Soodesh Buljore, Sandrine Vialle, Nicholas Whinnett

Patent number: 7248645Abstract: Closed loop wireless communication of signals using an adaptive transmit antenna array, in which multiple copies of signals to be transmitted by the transmit antenna array are produced with delays and weights that are functions of the multi-path transmission channel characteristics from the transmit antenna array to a receive antenna array of a receiver and are combined before transmission by the transmit antenna array. The delays and weights of the transmit copies for each transmit antenna element are functions of the respective multi-path transmission channel characteristics from that transmit antenna element to the receive antenna array such that the multi-path signal components propagated to each receiver element are received with distinguishable delays according to the propagation path. The receiver combines the received signal components from each receive antenna element with delays and weights that are respective functions of the multi-path transmission channels.Type: GrantFiled: April 18, 2003Date of Patent: July 24, 2007Assignee: Motorola, Inc.Inventors: Sandrine Vialle, Nicholas Whinnett, Soodesh Buljore

Publication number: 20060130053Abstract: A method (200, 300) of downloading software to a software definable radio (SDR) (105) includes the steps of determining (305) one or more configuration profile change(s), based on a service required by, or a location of, or an available network to, said SDR (105) and/or a SDR user profile and/or terminal profile. Software is downloaded (320, 340) to an intermediate communication unit, in response to the determination, which then re-configures the SDR (105). A communication unit (120) and a distributed software definable radio re-configuration management mechanism are also described. In this manner, an improved mechanism for software download is provided, whereby functionality of the SDR is placed in a personal radio assistance device. Furthermore, the user is provided with improved options in the download process.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 9, 2003Publication date: June 15, 2006Inventors: Soodesh Buljore, Christophe Janneteau, Didier Bourse

Publication number: 20050117660Abstract: Closed loop wireless communication of signals using an adaptive transmit antenna array (3), in which a plurality of copies of signals to be transmitted by the transmit antenna array (3) are produced with delays and weights (wnj) that are functions of the multi-path transmission channel characteristics (H) from the transmit antenna array (3) to a receive antenna array (4) of a receiver (2) and are combined before transmission by the transmit antenna array. The delays and weights (wnj) of the transmit copies for each transmit antenna element are functions of the respective multi-path transmission channel characteristics ( h n , m = 1 l = 1 , … ? ? , h n , m = M l = L ) from that transmit antenna element to the receive antenna array (4) ssuch that the multi-path signal components propagated to each receiver element are received with distinguishable delays according to the propagation path.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 18, 2003Publication date: June 2, 2005Inventors: Sandrine Vialle, Nicholas Whinnett, Soodesh Buljore

Patent number: 6434366Abstract: A transmitter uses adaptive array weights to modify a gain and a phase of a communication signal to produce a plurality of element communication signals coupled to antenna elements in an adaptive array antenna. The communication signal is transmitted along with an element pilot signal that is coupled to one of the elements in the adaptive array antenna. In a receiver, the communication signal is received, and the element pilot signal is received. Thereafter, the adaptive array weights used at the transmitter are estimated in response to comparing characteristics of the received element pilot signal to characteristics of the received communication signal.Type: GrantFiled: May 31, 2000Date of Patent: August 13, 2002Assignee: Motorola, Inc.Inventors: Robert M.
