  • Patent number: 8248323
Abstract: An antenna and methods for manufacturing the antenna is provided. The antenna (100) includes an electrically non-conductive substrate (102). The antenna further includes an electrically conductive strip (104). The electrically conductive strip (104) is wound around the electrically non-conductive substrate (102) so as to form an overlap (120) between adjacent turns of the electrically conductive strip (104), without creating a galvanic connection at the overlap.

  • Patent number: 8130153
Abstract: An electronic assembly and electronic device used for radio frequency communications are presented. The electronic device has a housing and an antenna feed point at least partially enclosed in the housing. There is at least one circuit board enclosed in the housing. An antenna counterpoise is coupled to the feed point. The counterpoise is enclosed in the housing and the counterpoise includes a foldable metallic patch that is folded around the circuit board such that the circuit board is sandwiched between opposite facing portions of the foldable metallic patch.

  • Patent number: 8115690
Abstract: Free space antenna structures are presented in which multiple radiating elements are disposed proximate to each other. In a structure containing two radiating elements, the radiating element of shorter wavelength is split into a monopole and a dipole that are electrically, but not physically, coupled to each other. The monopole has a length of ?/4 and is attached to the same feed as the longer wavelength radiating element. The dipole has a length of ?/4 and is attached to the same feed as the longer wavelength radiating element. Non-conductive shields prevent contact between the monopole, dipole, and longer wavelength radiating element. The longer wavelength radiating element is formed in a helix outside of which the dipole, and perhaps monopole, is disposed.

  • Patent number: 7817103
Abstract: A dual band multi-pitch helical antenna (101) includes a first section (201) positioned adjacent to the feed point having a widely spaced pitch. A second section (203) is attached to the first section (201) having a narrowly spaced pitch. A third section (205) is attached to the second section (203) having a widely spaced pitch, while a fourth section (207) is attached to the third section (205) having a narrowly spaced pitch. The antenna further includes a parasitic element (213a/213b) that is positioned adjacent to each of the first section (201), second section (203), third section (205), and fourth section (207) for enhancing broad-band antenna performance. A matching network (216) is connected between an antenna feed point and the first section (201) for matching the dual band multi-pitch helical antenna to a predetermined feed point impedance such that the antenna is resonant in at least two frequency bands.

  • Publication number: 20100127952
Abstract: An antenna to increase VHF bandwidth comprises an inner and an outer helical element separated by a comb-like spacer. The inner helical element has a dual pitch and is fed a radio frequency driving signal while the outer helical element has a uniform pitch and is coupled to ground. The dual pitch inner helical element coupled with the uniform pitch outer helical element provides an increase in bandwidth without a corresponding increase in the length of antenna, and, in fact, allows for a shorter antenna for communication devices than is currently available, without loss of signal strength or quality.

  • Patent number: 7133000
Abstract: An antenna assembly allows for a retractable/extendable antenna to be used in conjunction with a sealed portable communication device (200). An antenna bushing assembly (204) is used in conjunction with a sealed housing (208) having an unsealed compartment (206). The sealed housing (208) includes a radio frequency (RF) connector (210) formed therein. The bushing assembly (204) includes an RF plug (216) for mating with the RF connector (210) of the sealed housing (208). A sleeve (230) extends from the bushing assembly (204) to act as a passageway fro water intrusion into the unsealed compartment (206). An antenna (100) can thus retract and extend within the sleeve (230) of the unsealed compartment (206) while the RF connection remains intact due to the interconnect provided between the bushing assembly (204) and the sealed housing (208).

  • Publication number: 20060017649
Abstract: A helical antenna (100) forming an integrated notch filter includes a first helical radiating element (101) attached to a second helical radiating element (103). The second helical radiating element is one quarter wavelength of a resonant operating frequency. The helical antenna (100) forms a notch filter through the use of intrinsic capacitance and inductance in both radiating elements. The invention provides an integrated notch filter for attenuating a predetermined range of radio frequency (RF) signals presented to the helical antenna (100) without the use of discrete circuit components.
