  • Patent number: 8703340
Abstract: Provided is a lithium secondary battery with enhanced energy density including a cathode using a cathode active material containing lithium mixed transition metal oxide absorbing and discharging lithium ions, wherein a final discharge voltage is in the range of about 1.5 V to about 2.75 V. A final discharge voltage can be reduced to 1.5 V to 2.75 V from 3.0 V by using various lithium mixed transition metal oxides as a cathode active material, or by using the various lithium mixed transition metal oxides with the LCO-based cathode material mixed. Compared to typical LCO-based cathode materials of which capacity and energy density do not change even if a final discharge voltage is decreased, a cathode material of the present invention results in further improving capacity by 10-20% as the final discharge voltage is decreased.

  • Patent number: 6838206
Abstract: In a battery in which a separator is disposed between a cathode and an anode, a jelly roll is wound with the separator. The cathode, the anode and the separator are received in a battery case and surrounded with an electrolyte, and an opening of the battery case is sealed by a top cap assembly connected to the cathode. A curved groove is formed on the battery case as a safety element for preventing the explosion of the battery due to an increase of internal pressure, the groove being formed along a line of equal stress on the surface of the battery case.

  • Patent number: 6761996
Abstract: The invention is a lithium secondary battery that prevents electrolyte and internal gas leakage by durably sealing the electrolyte injecting hole. The lithium secondary battery consists of a battery can, which contains a polar plate set with an anode plate, and a separator inserted and installed inside the battery can. The opening of the battery can has a cap assembly with an electrolyte injecting hole so that the can interior can be sealed. To seal the battery can, a rivet shaped sealing member is inserted in the electrolyte injecting hole. The sealing member is placed in contact with the cap assembly at an area surrounding the electrolyte injecting hole and affixed to the cap assembly.

  • Patent number: 6630270
Abstract: The present invention relates to a prismatic lithium ion battery, more particularly to a prismatic lithium ion battery, wherein jelly roll of a lithium ion battery is mounted and electrolyte is infused in a prismatic can. The present invention provides a prismatic lithium ion battery in which improved safety is provided to a battery itself as well as its battery pack by mounting a jelly roll into a prismatic can with surfaces with recessed portions so that battery volume change due to the electrode expansion and pressure rise inside the battery is restrained. Furthermore, a prismatic lithium ion battery of the present invention improves the cycle life characteristics of a battery by alleviating the jelly roll deformation caused by the expansion and contraction of a jelly roll of a lithium ion battery due to continuous charging and discharging. Accordingly, lithium metal can be uniformly and stably adsorbed in and detached from a jelly roll.
