  • Patent number: 9319988
Abstract: A method and corresponding system to help manage user equipment device (UE) transmission power, specifically in a scenario where the UE was being served by a base station on a first carrier frequency and the UE is then going to communicate with a base station (whether the same or another base station) instead on a second, different carrier frequency. As disclosed, a UE may determine, based on communication by the UE on the first carrier frequency, a baseline initial transmit power for the UE to use for an initial transmission from the UE to a cellular base station on the second carrier frequency. Responsive to the second carrier frequency being different than the first carrier frequency, the UE may adjust the baseline initial transmit power to establish an adjusted initial transmit power. The UE may then engage in the initial transmission using the adjusted baseline initial transmit power.

  • Patent number: 9144081
Abstract: A radio access network (RAN) may receive a call setup request from a wireless communication device (WCD). The call setup request may indicate that the WCD supports a first media codec. The RAN may obtain a set of candidate wireless coverage areas for serving the WCD. A first subset of the candidate wireless coverage areas may support the first media codec, and a second subset of the candidate wireless coverage areas might not support the first media codec. The RAN may assign traffic channels to the WCD, such that the assigned traffic channels include traffic channels from at least two of the first subset of the candidate wireless coverage areas, but do not include traffic channels from any of the second subset of the candidate wireless coverage areas. The RAN may communicate with the WCD substantially simultaneously via the assigned traffic channels using the first media codec.

  • Patent number: 9042349
Abstract: In response to receiving a first resource request from a first wireless communication device (WCD) and a second resource request from a second WCD, a radio access network (RAN) may determine that the first WCD and second WCD are contending for a resource of a wireless coverage area that is defined by the RAN. The RAN may further determine that the first WCD supports a first media codec, and that the second WCD supports a second media codec but does not support the first media codec. The RAN may compare the first media codec to the second media codec, and based on a result of this comparison, may allocate the resource to the first WCD.
