    Abstract: An electric GDI pump is configured to allow fuel being pumped to cool the electric motor and associated motor control/drive circuit, and cool and lubricate a drive region of a high-pressure pump before passing through an inlet check valve of the high-pressure pump. The rotational speed of an electric GDI pump is de-coupled from the rotational speed of the internal combustion engine. In such a fuel supply system, the quantity of fuel pressurized can be regulated by changing the rotational speed of the electric GDI pump. According to aspects of the disclosure an electric GDI pump is driven by a variable speed direct current motor having a motor housing with a fuel inlet and a motor drive shaft connected to a rotor. The electric GDI pump may incorporate a low-pressure pump driven by one end of the drive shaft and an eccentric drive driven by an opposite end of the drive shaft.

    Abstract: A port fuel injection system includes a fuel pump configured to produce a flow of pressurized liquid fuel at a pressure between 10 and 50 bar. A fuel rail is connected to receive the flow of pressurized liquid fuel from the fuel pump, the fuel rail. A plurality of fuel injectors, including one fuel injector positioned in the intake port of each engine cylinder upstream of the intake valve for the engine cylinder are connected to receive pressurized fuel from the fuel rail. An engine control unit (ECU) receives signals from sensors on the internal combustion engine and is programmed to actuate the fuel injectors to deliver fuel to each engine cylinder over a full range of engine operating conditions. A port fuel injection system with high pressure and fast acting fuel injectors improves fuel delivery and performance over the full range of engine operating conditions.

    Abstract: A high-pressure fuel supply pump for a fuel system that supplies a high-pressure fuel injection (GDI) apparatus and a low-pressure fuel injection (PFI) apparatus incorporates an inlet check valve to isolate a low-pressure fuel feed channel in the pump from pressure fluctuations at the inlet of an inlet control valve. Upstream of the inlet check valve, the low-pressure fuel feed channel is connected to a seal chamber surrounding the pumping plunger. Circulating fresh low-pressure fuel through the seal chamber ensures that the pumping plunger and the clearance between the plunger and the pump bore are cooled and lubricated with fuel, even when high pressure fuel is not produced by the high-pressure pump. The low-pressure fuel feed channel is connected to the low-pressure PFI outlet downstream of the seal chamber. This pump configuration provides stable source of low-pressure fuel for a PFI system.
