    Abstract: An apparatus or method for transmitting data blocks on a communications channel having a radio link between two stations including a user equipment comprises receiving first data blocks from the user equipment, and transmitting second data blocks to the user equipment. A polling interval is dynamically set for the transmission of polling messages to the user equipment after transmission of the second data blocks, the polling interval being set in accordance with at least one of: a size of one or more data blocks received by the apparatus from the user equipment, a size of one or more blocks transmitted from the apparatus to the user equipment, and a service to which the user equipment is subscribed. The apparatus may be used as a PCU in a cellular mobile telephone system.

    Abstract: Data blocks to be received each comprise a header and a data field including respectively first and second codes for error detection. The decoding of a signal segment received having first and second portions corresponding respectively to the header and to the data field of a block gave rise to a verification of the first code in the first portion. If the first code is correct, a check is made to verify whether the second portion of the decoded signal has a second correct code. A data block is considered to be detected either in the presence of first and second correct codes, or in the presence only of a first correct code when a data likelihood criterion, evaluated during the decoding of the second portion of the signal, is fulfilled.

    Abstract: A radio telecommunications system and method of operating the same is described which provides a reduce delay for transfer of packet data. Before a data transmission is released in one direction (uplink or downlink) a channel is reserved in the other direction. The channel reservation may be held for a certain period of time, e.g. 5 seconds after which the channel is released. The present invention is particularly useful when there is a large asymmetry in data transfer between uplink and downlink.

    Abstract: A cellular mobile radio network includes base stations, a packet control unit capable of communicating with a radio terminal via two or more base stations, and routing means for routing data between a remote unit and the packet control unit. The data transmitted by the remote unit to the terminal are stored temporarily in the packet control unit. The remote unit is adapted to receive from the terminal acknowledgments relating to transmitted data segments and to retransmit data segments that have not been acknowledged on the expiry of a retransmission time depending on the received acknowledgments. Data segments are transmitted from the remote unit to the terminal via a first base station connected to the packet control unit. In response to a request for communication transfer to a second base station connected to the packet control unit, only a portion of the data stored temporarily in the packet control unit is retransmitted to the terminal via the second base station.

    Abstract: The modulated-signal blocks are formed by a sending station from respective data blocks of variable size received from a data source on a time-division multiplexing synchronous link. They are then sent with a specified block rate on multiplexed physical channels. The synchronous link between the data source and the sending station supports dedicated channels respectively associated with the physical channels, each offering a specified transmission capacity determined over a sending period inverse to the block rate, and supplementary channels. A part at least of each data block intended for a physical channel is transmitted on the associated dedicated channel. When the size of the block exceeds the transmission capacity, another part is transmitted on at least one supplementary channel of the synchronous link, allocated dynamically to the physical channel.

    Abstract: The invention relates to a method whereby the control unit produces a sequence of blocks, each comprising a header and data to be transmitted. Each block is transmitted to the destination terminal with a level of error protection which is selected from among several pre-defined levels, the selected level being indicated in a piece of signalling information that accompanies the block transmitted. The header of each block comprises an acknowledgement control field which is activated intermittently by the control unit in order to request an acknowledgement of blocks from the terminal. A higher level of protection is selected for transmitting blocks having a header with an activated acknowledgement control field than for transmitting blocks having a header with a non-activated acknowledgement control field.
