Patent number: 7239657Abstract: Apparatus and a method for enhancing the interference resistance of so-called RFID systems, wherein identification messages delivered from an identification device are longer than the time for which an anticipated interference or disturbance is calculated to continue, and wherein the messages contain redundancy, such as a checksum. The messages are delivered from the identification device repetitively, and are redundancy checked. In the event of any discrepancy in the redundancy check, such as when the checksum is checked against the data content of the message and is found in disagreement, successive messages are checked bit for bit against each other. Any deviations between otherwise previously rejected messages are assumed to be due to external interference and are thus successively substituted until the redundancy check gives an accepted result, such as through the medium of a checksum check according to the so-called CRC method.Type: GrantFiled: November 1, 2000Date of Patent: July 3, 2007Assignee: Tagmaster AGInventor: Staffan Gunnarsson

Publication number: 20060164291Abstract: A system for identification of primarily man-made objects is described. A transponder at an object is arranged to be energized by an essentially infrared light beam at 700-1100 nm and sends messages to a reader via an information beam at 700-1100 nm. The transponder is powered by solar cells in crystalline silicon or copper indium selenide. The messages have a bit stream where a bit is represented with a pulse burst that has a pulse repetition frequency higher than 30 kHz.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 8, 2004Publication date: July 27, 2006Inventor: Staffan Gunnarsson

Patent number: 6895221Abstract: A system that includes a mobile communications unit, wherein an identification module is added between a radio part and an antenna in a mobile telephone that includes a Bluetooth function. The identification module includes a mixer for transposing identification messages from identification devices in a 2.45 GHz RFID system of the backscatter type, to a baseband for further processing in the computer part of the unit and optionally communication with a superordinate system by a standard call channel or a Bluetooth channel. The unit can also send information to identification devices for alerting and/or transmitting data. Modulation and encoding can be effected in accordance with the Bluetooth standard, thereby enabling the mixer to be included as an integral part of a standard Bluetooth radio.Type: GrantFiled: November 29, 2000Date of Patent: May 17, 2005Assignee: Tagmaster ABInventor: Staffan Gunnarsson

Publication number: 20040067734Abstract: A system that includes a mobile communications unit, wherein an identification module is added between radio part and antenna in a mobile telephone that includes a Bluetooth function, and wherein the module comprises a mixer for transposing identification messages from identification devices in a 2.45 GHz RFID system of the backscatter type to a baseband for further processing in the computer part of the unit and possibly communication with a superordinate system via standard call channel or Bluetooth channel. In one particular embodiment, the unit is also able to send information to said identification devices for alerting and/or transmitting data, wherein modulation and encoding can be effected in accordance with the Bluetooth standard, therewith enabling said mixer to be included as an integral part of a standard Bluetooth radio.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 13, 2002Publication date: April 8, 2004Inventor: Staffan Gunnarsson

Patent number: 6246356Abstract: A transponder for automatic identification and corresponding systems. The transponder may include patch antennas for reflecting transponder data as information sidebands of a microwave signal received from a reading unit, for example. The antennas may by parallel to, but oppositely directed from one another. Additionally the antennas may act against at least one intermediate earth plane, and are linearly polarized so that their polarization direction is rotated through 90° in relation thereto. In this arrangement, the transponder may be read from a short distance and from both sides of the antennas, and communication with the transponder may not be disturbed by the presence of a rearwardly-located reflection plane.Type: GrantFiled: July 30, 1999Date of Patent: June 12, 2001Assignee: Tagmaster ABInventor: Staffan Gunnarsson

Patent number: 5640164Abstract: A system for communication by means of microwaves between transponders (3) and a central unit (5) is described. It is primarily characterized by a communication unit (4) for directed communication at a relatively short distance with the transponders (3) and at a relatively long distance with the central unit (5). The communication unit (4) also comprises a memory (23) for the intermediate storing of information.Type: GrantFiled: October 14, 1994Date of Patent: June 17, 1997Assignee: Saab-Scania Combitech AktiebolagInventor: Staffan Gunnarsson

Patent number: 5552790Abstract: A device for wireless transfer of information includes a data carrier in the form of a thin card, and a transponder that receives a first microwave signal, modulates it and codes it with data, and reradiates a second microwave signal without adding new energy thereto. The transponder includes at least one antenna device formed using microstrip conductors. The antenna device includes a patch antenna with an antenna layer that acts against a ground plane where the antenna layer and the ground plane are of substantially equal size. The device is characterized in that, it is equipped with a separate card holder with a reflective surface that is larger than said ground plane. The reflective surface increases the range by reradiating the second microwave signal and reducing sensitivity to back lobe reflections.Type: GrantFiled: October 19, 1994Date of Patent: September 3, 1996Assignee: Saab-Scania Combitech AktiebolagInventor: Staffan Gunnarsson

Patent number: 5414427Abstract: A device for information transmission, a so-called transponder, for receiving a first microwave signal, modulating and coding, and retransmitting a second microwave signal, having at least one antenna made in microstrip technique is described. The device is characterized primarily in that the antenna has an antenna layer (20), acting towards a ground plane (21), the antenna layer and the ground plane essentially equal area, and in that the device further having a reflex position (23 ), arranged next to or at a distance of at most 1/6 of the air wave length of the first microwave signal from the edges of the antenna layer and the ground plane, so that an antenna lobe directional from the antenna is obtained, including directly transmitted microwave signal and reflected microwave signal. With this embodiment a device is obtained that is compact, effective, light and inexpensive and gives well defined and directional antenna lobe for communications with good range.Type: GrantFiled: January 21, 1993Date of Patent: May 9, 1995Inventor: Staffan Gunnarsson

Patent number: 5392049Abstract: A device for positioning a first object relative to a second object, primarily for positioning an automatic fuelling device relative to vehicles. A transponder using a microstrip antenna design is small in dimension and gives accurate position indication by attachment to a back surface of a body which acts as a close reflection plane. The preferred embodiment of the device is a microstrip patch antenna where the ground plane is of similar size as the antenna element, and where the transponder is mounted on a car body rearward of the fuel filling point, to result in a radiation diagram that is created from the added direct signal from the antenna element and the reflected signal from the car body. A rounded profile of the transponder is a result of placement of its battery adjacent to the radiating element.Type: GrantFiled: January 21, 1993Date of Patent: February 21, 1995Inventor: Staffan Gunnarsson
