Patent number: 9968027Abstract: Methods and devices for automated adjustment of a digging implement during harvest of underground crops are described. Utilizing the devices, a digging implement, e.g., a blade, can be located and maintained at a desired depth as a harvester travels across a field. During use, the digging implement depth controls can be varied as the harvester travels within a single field under different operating conditions, e.g., different soil friability, consistency, etc., thereby preventing crop loss and improving crop yield.Type: GrantFiled: July 14, 2016Date of Patent: May 15, 2018Assignee: Clemson UniversityInventors: Kendall R. Kirk, J. Warren White, Joel S. Peele, W. Scott Monfort, Hunter F. Massey, James S. Thomas, Stanley A. Brantley, Andrew C. Warner

Patent number: 9958301Abstract: Yield monitoring systems for harvesting machines and methods that can provide yield monitoring of crops are described. Machines include those that pneumatically convey crop through the machine such as peanut harvesting machines. The yield monitoring system includes a force sensor that can be located in conjunction with a duct of the harvesting machine such that impact of the crop materials on an impact plate within the duct will be registered by the force sensor. This registration can be used to determine a mass flow rate for the crop, which can be correlated to yield of the crop. The systems can include additional components such as optical monitors, moisture sensors, and pressure sensors.Type: GrantFiled: July 9, 2015Date of Patent: May 1, 2018Assignee: Clemson UniversityInventors: Kendall R. Kirk, J. Warren White, W. Scott Monfort, Hunter F. Massey, D. Hollens Free, Stanley A. Brantley, Joel S. Peele, Jacob B. Fravel, William G. Henderson, Jr.

Patent number: 6551655Abstract: This invention provides a mixing chamber that utilizes several tined cylinders to convey materials through the mixing chamber for applying liquid additives to the materials. Each of the tined cylinders includes a number of spring biased tines extending from the surface of the cylinder. The tined cylinders are arranged within the mixing chamber such that, as the tined cylinders rotate about an axis, the spring biased tines engage the materials within the mixing chamber and “sweep” them along towards a discharge opening of the mixing chamber. As the materials are conveyed through the mixing chamber, an additive liquid, typically containing various chemicals, colorants, dies, and/or paints, is sprayed onto the materials. In this manner, liquid additives are applied to materials more evenly and more thoroughly, resulting in a more consistent finished product.Type: GrantFiled: March 2, 2001Date of Patent: April 22, 2003Assignee: Amadas Industries, Inc.Inventors: Junius W. White, Stanley A. Brantley, Jr.

Patent number: 6390915Abstract: A combine having a variable speed drive that rotates at least one of a plurality of thrashing cylinders that thrash crops. Three of the thrashing cylinders have a gradually increasing number of flexible fingers that thrash the crops. The combine also includes a drum separator located downstream of the thrashing cylinders with respect to the direction of crop flow in the combine. The drum separator separates desirable portions of the crops and is part of a tailings return system. The combine also includes disk separators that are configured to minimize damage to desirable portions of the crops.Type: GrantFiled: February 22, 1999Date of Patent: May 21, 2002Assignee: Amadas IndustriesInventors: Stanley A. Patent number: 5980382Abstract: A crop harvesting combine having a body with a feeder house at its front end. The feeder house carries a detachable header which may be wider than the body and can thus be detached when moving the combine. The feeder house is vertically moveable in an arcuate path from a header ground contacting position to an elevated position. A first thrashing cylinder is in the header and a second thrashing cylinder is at the front of the combine body. The arcuate path of the feeder house has its center approximately at the rotational axis of the second thrashing cylinder so the distance between the axes of the first and second cylinders remains approximately constant as the feeder house is moved vertically. Downstream of the thrashing cylinder are a plurality of separation cylinders, at least some of which have concaves thereunder for reorienting elongate trash before being discharged.Type: GrantFiled: December 10, 1998Date of Patent: November 9, 1999Assignee: Amadas IndustriesInventors: Stanley A. Brantley, Mearl J. Jennings, K. Michael Williams, Shawn T. Lane, Michael R. Sayre, David E. Stables

Patent number: 5901856Abstract: A device for separating office paper and computer printout from cardboard waste material is provided. The device has two decks, each of which has multiple driving and separating disc rotors. Non-cardboard paper can fall between the disc rotors as the paper flows through the machine. A single counter-rotational disc rotor is provided which inverts cardboard and empties boxes. The drive for each deck of the device is independent and variable speed, allowing for quick reconfiguration between input streams.Type: GrantFiled: March 28, 1997Date of Patent: May 11, 1999Inventors: Stanley A. Brantley, Jr., Junius Warren White, Shawn Lane
