  • Patent number: 6142542
Abstract: An improved collision impact absorber for mounting upon a vehicle is formed of an elongated structural member both pivotally and longitudinally movable with respect to the vehicle. Impact force upon the outer end of the structural member is initially absorbed by longitudinal deflection of the structural member, and further absorbed by the rotation of the structural member with respect to the vehicle. The rotation of the structural member with respect to the vehicle transfers and dissipates the impact force into a reactive lifting of the vehicle, the weight of the vehicle acting as a resistant force to the lifting of the vehicle. A catch, or detent, allows the elongated structural member to longitudinally move or deflect a certain, predetermined distance prior to initiating rotation of the member about a pivot point.

  • Patent number: 5257842
Abstract: An impact absorber for a vehicle having a frame and a front bumper includes an elongate arm having a front end and a back end. This arm is suitably mounted by a mounting system in a rest position at an angle to horizontal with the back end higher than the front end and the front end extending beyond the bumper so that the front end is engaged before any other portion of the vehicle by any horizontal impact force at the level thereof. The mounting system includes a rotation device for mounting the back end of the arm to the frame for rotation about a horizontal axis such that a horizontal impact force to the front end of the arm is changed directly to a lifting force at the rotation device and hence to a lifting force of the frame of the vehicle as the arm rotates about the rotation device due to the impact force. Preferably, the front end includes a vertical extension with a forwardmost pad.

  • Patent number: 4480053
Abstract: A coating composition. The composition includes particles of polystyrene foam in admixture with a latex resin binder. The admixture can be sprayed or otherwise coated on a roof or other surface and provides a durable, insulating and inexpensive substitute for other coating materials. The amount of latex binder, which is relatively expensive, is preferably kept to a minimum and the polystyrene foam particles may be derived from waste or low-cost foam polystyrene.
