  • Patent number: 5822943
Abstract: An asphalt-based roofing shingle is disclosed that includes a substrate including at least one composite having a scrim bonded to a mat, coated with filled asphalt and granules. The scrim has woven or non-woven fiberglass or polyester strands arranged in a crossing pattern, such as a 10.times.10 thread crossing pattern per square inch, and the mat has a layer of organic, fiberglass or polyester materials, the scrim and mat being joined together with a rubberized binder or other suitable bonding material. The shingle may be used, for example, in a residential roofing application, in which a portion of a roof deck is covered by providing the shingle including the substrate and a fastening device such as a nail having a head; positioning the shingle on the roof deck portion; and driving the nail through the shingle and into the roof deck to secure the shingle to the roof deck.

  • Patent number: 4825616
Abstract: The invention relates to a reroofing shingle having a 7.5 inch or a 15 inch vertical exposure, a 2 inch lap portion and an overall height of n(exposure)+2 inches where n has a value of 1 when the reroofing shingle is an undivided strip and a value of 2 when the reroofing shingle comprises a sheet having spaced tabs in the butt portion thereof. The invention also relates to the installation of the present tabbed reroofing shingles over standard asphaltic roofing in a manner such that the lower tab edges of each successive course of reroofing shingle is alined with the top of the spaces between tabs of the preceding reroofing course and allows for a 7.5 inch or 15 inch exposure between courses.

  • Patent number: 4795661
Abstract: A rectangular shingle sheet having a butt portion which is longitudinally divided into spaced apart tab segments and an undivided headlap portion which is 1.3 to 1.5 times higher than the outward extensions of said tab segments in the butt portion; the butt portion and headlap portion carrying an asphaltic backing of varying thickness wherein the upper area of the headlap portion which is of a height approximately equal to that of the butt portion is coated with an asphaltic backing of between about 5 and about 15 mils thickness and the remaining lower area of the headlap portion and the entire butt portion is uniformly coated with an asphaltic backing of between about 20 and about 100 mils thickness. In one embodiment, the shingle is a composite roofing shingle comprising a shingle sheet having a butt portion which is longitudinally divided into spaced apart tab segments, and a separate elongated strip underlying the tab segments which fills the space between the tabs.
