  • Publication number: 20030109199
Abstract: The present invention relates to a cemented carbide wear part with a wear surface with improved friction and wear properties. This has been obtained by providing the wear surface with a surface layer with a thickness of 0.5 &mgr;m to 25 &mgr;m, preferably 1 to 10 &mgr;m with an average WC grain size of less than 500 nm. The surface layer is obtained by lapping the wear surface with an abrasive disc for at least 10 minutes at 1000 to 3000 rpm at a pressure of 0.1 to 0.5 MPa preferably without any grinding media.

  • Patent number: 6033735
Abstract: There is disclosed a method of coating cemented carbide inserts at least partly with a layer of at least one iron group metal. When inserts coated with such a layer are brazed to a tool holder, a joint with improved strength is obtained. According to the present method, one or more metal salts of at least one iron group metal containing organic groups are dissolved and complex bound in at least one polar solvent with at least one complex former comprising functional groups in the form of OH or NR.sub.3 (R.dbd.H or alkyl). A soluble carbon source is added to the solution which is subsequently at least partly applied to the cemented carbide inserts by dipping, spraying or painting. The inserts are dried and heat treated in an inert and/or reducing atmosphere. As a result, cemented carbide inserts are obtained at least partly coated with a layer of an iron group metal.

  • Patent number: 6013117
Abstract: There is disclosed PCD or PcBN-tools for cutting wood containing 3 to 20 volume % binder phase based in Ni and/or Co. The binder phase comprises in solution, in weight percent, Co max 95, Ni max 95, Cr 5-45. In addition, nitrides and/or carbonitrides of Zr, Ti, Cr, Ta and/or V are evenly distributed in the structure in an amount of less than 50 volume %, preferably 5 to 40%, of the binder phase with a mean grain size less that 5 .mu.m, preferably 0.3 to 4 .mu.m.

  • Patent number: 5885653
Abstract: One or more metal salts of at least one of Co, Ni and/or Fe is dissolved/suspended in water. To the solution/suspension is added at least one hard constituent powder to form a slurry. The solvent is evaporated, preferably by spray drying, and the resultant powder is heat treated in a reducing atmosphere. As a result, a coated hard constituent powder is obtained which, after addition of a pressing agent, can be compacted and sintered according to standard practice. In addition to or instead of said salt of Co, Ni and/or Fe, a soluble salt of Mo and/or W can be used.

  • Patent number: 5786076
Abstract: A corrosion resistant material contains essentially WC, and 0.1 to 10 weight-%, preferably 0.5 to 5 weight-%, of one or more of the metallic carbides TiC, VC, NbC, TaC, Cr.sub.3 C.sub.2, ZrC or combinations thereof or with WC, and either spherical graphite and/or spherical hexagonal BN up to 10 volume-% with a size of about 3 .mu.m or 1-5 weight % of one or more of VN, Ti(C,N), CrN, ZrN. In applications with sliding surfaces, it has been found that the material has surprising results regarding low friction characteristics.

  • Patent number: 5697994
Abstract: A cutting tool for woodworking applications has a tungsten carbide substrate and a hard layer bonded to the substrate at high temperature and high pressure, i.e. where diamond or cubic boron nitride is thermodynamically stable. The hard layer comprises polycrystalline diamond or polycrystalline cubic boron nitride, and a supporting cobalt phase including adjuvant alloying materials for providing oxidation and corrosion resistance. Typical alloying elements include nickel, aluminum, silicon, titanium, molybdenum and chromium. Such materials also retard transformation of cobalt from the HCP to the FCC crystal structure at high temperature. The hard layer has an as-pressed surface parallel to the substrate and is only about 0.3 millimeters thick. An additional secondary phase including a carbide, nitride and carbonitride of metals such as titanium may also be present in the PCD or PCBN layer.

  • Patent number: 5505902
Abstract: A method wherein one or more metal salts of at least one iron group metal containing organic groups are dissolved and complex bound in at least one polar solvent with at least one complex former comprising functional groups in the form of OH or NR.sub.3, (RH.dbd.H or alkyl). Hard constituent powder and, optionally, a soluble carbon source are added to the solution. The solvent is evaporated and the remaining powder is heat treated in an inert and/or reducing atmosphere. As a result, coated hard constituent powder is obtained which after addition of a pressing agent can be compacted and sintered according to standard practice to a body containing hard constituents in a binder phase.
