  • Patent number: 9001675
Abstract: Exemplary embodiments increase reliability of communication over a non-deterministic communication channel, in electric power systems. A communication channel is monitored based on regular network traffic, by evaluating messages or data packets carrying real-time operational data as a payload. A permanent determination of a channel quality, including appropriate alarming in case the channel quality is found insufficient, is based on an evaluation, at a receiving node, of data packets continually transmitted by a sending node. These continually or repeatedly transmitted data packets can include identical payloads reflecting current states rather than state changes as operational data.

  • Patent number: 8416864
Abstract: A method and modem are provided for obtaining an optimized efficiency of an Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplex (OFDM) data transmission, such as for power line communication, for example. The length or duration of a guard interval or cyclic prefix in an OFDM symbol is newly selected at each start-up of a modem while initializing or preparing the OFDM data transmission. The length of the guard interval can be given by the number of samples in a time-discrete representation, and the value of such number of samples that is retained for the subsequent data transmission can be selected from a plurality of pre-determined possibilities based on an evaluation of a channel quality of a communication channel including a physical line to which the modem is connected. Hence, the selected value depends on actual transmission conditions, and the optimization potential offered by a more flexible handling of system parameters is exploited to meet changing conditions on the physical line.

  • Patent number: 6005477
Abstract: A method and a system for rapid and interference-free data communication via power supply networks at any voltage levels. The combined effects of interference from signal distortion, frequency-selective signal attenuation or noise and from pulsed interference is reduced by using an MCM multicarrier modulation method. By combining the MCM method with a specially adapted interleaver (data scrambler) and error-protection coding, the error rates can be drastically reduced and the transmission rates can be increased to considerably more than 2 kbit/s.
