  • Patent number: 8285226
Abstract: A transmitting entity uses different steering vectors for different subbands to achieve steering diversity. Each steering vector defines or forms a beam for an associated subband. Any steering vector may be used for steering diversity. The steering vectors may be defined such that the beams vary in a continuous instead of abrupt manner across the subbands. This may be achieved by applying continuously changing phase shifts across the subbands for each transmit antenna. As an example, the phase shifts may change in a linear manner across the subbands for each transmit antenna, and each antenna may be associated with a different phase slope. The application of linearly changing phase shifts to modulation symbols in the frequency domain may be achieved by either delaying or circularly shifting the corresponding time-domain samples.

  • Patent number: 8214728
Abstract: A method and apparatus are disclosed for forming a frame of interleaved information bits in a communication system, where the decoding of the frame of interleaved information bits may begin before all of the bits in the frame are received. An exemplary interleaved frame is formed by receiving a frame of N information bits within the communication system; encoding the information bits at a code rate R to provide encoded bits; and arranging the encoded bits into a frame of N/R coded bits, wherein a plurality of puncturing patterns pi are applied to the frame of N/R coded bits such that a code rate of R/ai is produced for each of the plurality of puncturing pattern pi. The arrangement of encoded bits involves applying a puncturing pattern pj to the encoded bits; and applying a permutation function to the punctured encoded bits to generate a fractional section of the frame of N/R coded bits. The fractional section of the frame of N/R coded bits comprises N/R*aj bits.

  • Patent number: 8201039
Abstract: Embodiments disclosed herein address the need in the art for reduced overhead control with the ability to adjust transmission rates as necessary. In one aspect, a first signal indicates an acknowledgement of a decoded subpacket and whether or not a rate control command is generated, and a second signal conditionally indicates the rate control command when one is generated. In another aspect, a grant may be generated concurrently with the acknowledgement. In yet another aspect, a mobile station monitors the first signal, conditionally monitors the second signal as indicated by the first signal, and may monitor a third signal comprising a grant. In yet another aspect, one or more base stations transmit one or more of the various signals. Various other aspects are also presented. These aspects have the benefit of providing the flexibility of grant-based control while utilizing lower overhead when rate control commands are used, thus increasing system utilization, increasing capacity and throughput.

  • Patent number: 8160031
Abstract: Power control of mixed voice and data transmissions is disclosed. A voice signal is transmitted at a dynamically-adjusted voice transmit power capped at a maximum voice transmit power limit. Concurrently, data bursts are transmitted on top of the voice signal. Data noise is inserted between the data bursts transmissions. The data burst and inserted data noise are transmitted at a dynamically-adjusted data transmit power based on the voice transmit power to restrict the rate of change of the data transmit power until a maximum data transmit power limit is reached.

  • Patent number: 8098607
Abstract: Methods and apparatus are presented for efficient broadcasting in wireless packet data systems. A single MAC_ID is used for broadcasting to a group of subscribers. By using the channel quality information of the group of subscribers, a base station determines the identity of the subscriber with the worst channel conditions. The timing and the transmission format of the multi-cast are then tailored so that the subscriber with the worst channel conditions is capable of recovering the transmission. If the timing and the transmission format is chosen in relation to subscriber with the worst channel conditions, it is probable that other subscribers will be able to recover the transmission as well. Hence, only a single MAC_ID need to be used to make a single broadcast, rather than sending multiple transmissions to multiple subscribers.

  • Patent number: 8094571
Abstract: Methods and apparatus are presented for improving the feedback of channel information to a serving base station, which allows a reduction in the reverse link load while allowing the base station to improve the forward link data throughput. Over a channel quality indicator channel, three subchannels are generated; the re-synch subchannel, the differential feedback subchannel, and the transition indicator subchannel. The information carried on each subchannel can be used separately or together by a base station to selectively update internal registers storing channel conditions. The channel conditions are used to determine transmission formats, power levels, and data rates of forward link transmissions.

  • Patent number: 8065581
Abstract: Methods and apparatus are presented for dynamically controlling the re-transmission scheme of acknowledgment signals. A source transmits a first data packet over a slot s1. If channel conditions are favorable, source transmits a second data packet over slot s2, which precedes the reception of any acknowledgment signals. A destination receives first data packet over slot d1 and second data packet over slot d2. Destination decodes first data packet during slots d2 and d3, and second data packet over slots d3 and d4. Destination transmits an acknowledgment signal (ACK1) associated with first data packet during slot d4. Rather then transmitting the second ACK1 associated with first data packet over slot d5, destination preempts this slot with an acknowledgment signal ACK2, which is associated with second data packet transmitted by source. Hence, destination is configured to overwrite the repetition of a previous acknowledgment in order to transmit a new acknowledgment.

  • Patent number: 8050361
Abstract: First and second transmission links are established with a remote station. An information signal is encoded to provide an encoded information signal having more bits than the information signal. First and second transmission signals are provided wherein each transmission signal has bits selected from the encoded information signal. Each of the first and second transmission signals is transmitted to the remote station by way of a respective one of the first and second transmission links. The remote station receives and combines the first and second transmission signals transmitted by the remote station to provide a combined encoded signal. The combined encoded signal is decoded by the remote station to provide the information signal. The first and second transmission links can be formed between the remote station and a single base station or between the remote station and two separate base stations.

  • Patent number: 7881711
Abstract: Methods and apparatus are presented for dynamically decoding acknowledgment signals. A source receives an acknowledgment signal and starts monitoring an energy value associated with the acknowledgment signal. If the energy value exceeds a predetermined threshold amount before the end of the acknowledgment signal, then the source is confident that the portion of the acknowledgment signal received up to that point could be decoded successfully. Hence, the source decodes that portion of the acknowledgment signal and disregards the remainder of the acknowledgment signal.
