Patent number: 7986711Abstract: A system and method for broadband communications over power lines has a low-voltage transformer for the house connection unit and/or the electricity distribution inside the house. The system method allow for several parallel asynchronous data communications in different sub-channels with individual transmit power in each sub-channel. Sub-channel separation uses pass-band filters with high stop-band attenuation. High data rate in each sub-channel is achieved through the use of discrete wavelet multi-tone modulation. Coarse synchronization in each sub-channel and the optimization of the coefficients of the time-domain equalizer are carried out using a training sequence.Type: GrantFiled: October 11, 2005Date of Patent: July 26, 2011Assignee: ACN Advanced Communications Network SAInventors: Stephan Horvath, Antony Jamin

Publication number: 20100183054Abstract: Synchronization method for a multi-carrier transceiver using a filter bank, for example a cosine modulated filter bank, a wavelet packet filter bank or a complex modulated filter bank, the transceiver comprising a transmitter (100) and a receiver (300) able to communicate with each other over a communication channel (200), the method comprising the following steps: sending a periodic and coded training sequence over the communication channel (200) with the transmitter (100), determining in the receiver (300) time alignment information from the received training sequence, performing a coarse synchronization of the receiver (300) to said transmitter (100) using said time alignment information, sending modulated data (1) in data mode over the communication channel (200) with the transmitter (100), pilot signals being multiplexed into said data (1), tracking sampling frequency offset and phase jitter within the receiver (300) using the pilot signals, performing the continuous synchronization of the transceiver wiType: ApplicationFiled: March 19, 2008Publication date: July 22, 2010Inventors: Donnacha Daly, Stephan Horvath, Anthony Jamin

Publication number: 20080311039Abstract: The present invention provides for the first time YY1, a transcription factor gene over-expressed and/or functionally overactive in human cancer. The present invention provides methods of diagnosing and providing a prognosis for cancer such as prostate cancer, as well as methods of drug discovery. YY1 is also a therapeutic target for treatment of cancer resistant to conventional and experimental cancer therapeutics. Inhibition of YY1 expression and/or activity sensitizes resistant tumor cells to cytotoxic treatments, including chemotherapy, radiation therapy, hormonal therapy, and immunotherapy.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 9, 2005Publication date: December 18, 2008Applicant: The Regents of the University of CaliforniaInventors: Benjamin Bonavida, Lee Goodglick, Hermes Gaban, Stephan Horvath, David Seligson

Publication number: 20060146866Abstract: A system and a method are proposed for broadband communications over power lines comprising the area of the low-voltage transformer to the house connection unit and/or the electricity distribution inside the house. The new method allows for several parallel asynchronous data communications in different sub-channels with individual transmit power in each sub-channel. Sub-channel separation uses pass-band filters with high stop-band attenuation. High data rate in each sub-channel is achieved through the use of discrete wavelet multi-tone modulation. Coarse synchronization in each sub-channel and the optimization of the coefficients of the time-domain equalizer are carried out using a training sequence.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 11, 2005Publication date: July 6, 2006Inventors: Stephan Horvath, Antony Jamin

Patent number: 4618982Abstract: A digitized speech signal is divided into sections and each section is analyzed by the linear prediction method to determine the coefficients of a sound formation model, a sound volume parameter, information concerning voiced or unvoiced excitation and the period of the vocal band base frequency. In order to improve the quality of speech without increasing the data rate, redundance reducing coding of the speech parameters is effected. The coding of the speech parameters is performed in blocks of two or three adjacent speech sections. The parameters of the first speech section are coded in a complete form, and those of the other speech sections in a differential form or in part not at all. The average number of bits required per speech section is reduced to compensate for the increased section rate, so that the overall data rate is not increased.Type: GrantFiled: September 23, 1982Date of Patent: October 21, 1986Assignee: Gretag AktiengesellschaftInventors: Stephan Horvath, Carlo Bernasconi

Patent number: 4589131Abstract: Speech signal is decided voiced or unvoiced by a sequence of unilateral decisions: a first test decides "unvoiced" if standardized energy E.sub.s is below a threshold, or "ambiguous" if above the threshold whereby a second test decides "unvoiced" if the number of zero crossings ZC is above a threshold, and ambiguous if below the threshold. Up to six criteria may be so tested as ambiguous before a "voiced" decision is made.Type: GrantFiled: September 23, 1982Date of Patent: May 13, 1986Assignee: Gretag AktiengesellschaftInventors: Stephan Horvath, Yung-Shain Wu
