A second guide extending in the direction on the first carriage carries a second carriage displaceable in the direction on the second guide by a second motor. The workpiece is clamped to the second carriage. A controller is connected to the first and second motors for shifting the second carriage in the direction at a speed independent of a speed of the first carriage while the first carriage is moving in the direction.
