  • Patent number: 9207146
Abstract: A method monitors an electromagnetic hydraulic valve for controlling a hydraulically adjustable valve gear of a reciprocating piston engine. The hydraulic valve includes an electromagnetic coil and a moving armature configured to connect a control port hydraulically to a high-pressure port or a low-pressure port, depending on an energization of the coil. The method includes detecting a movement of the armature, using a control unit, in response to an energization of the coil based on a mutual induction in the coil and identifying a defect, using the control unit, if the expected mutual induction does not occur.

  • Patent number: 7280911
Abstract: A system and method for monitoring the control of an engine having at least two control units, which is constructed of at least two cylinder rows or of two partial engines is provided. A control unit is assigned to each cylinder row or each partial engine, which control unit, on the basis of detected operating parameters, controls the function of the respective cylinder bank assigned to it or of the partial engine assigned to it. The control units mutually exchanging their control variables, and the detected operating parameters and the control variables emitted by the control units being monitored jointly to determine their credibility.

  • Patent number: 5435172
Abstract: For testing the conversion rate of exhaust gas catalysts inserted in an exhaust gas train of an internal-combustion engine, a process is provided which first requires a first operating condition during a time period while specified marginal requirements are met. If these requirements are met, an exhaust gas pulse is generated during a second time period, for example, during a coasting operation, which exhaust gas pulse does not correspond to this condition. The reaction of a temperature sensor which is arranged downstream of the catalyst is then analyzed. If the change of the exhaust gas temperature because of the exhaust gas pulse is not within specified limits, a signal is triggered which indicates an unacceptably low conversion rate.

  • Patent number: 5195498
Abstract: The invention is directed to a method of checking the tightness of a tank-venting apparatus for a motor vehicle having a fuel tank and an internal combustion engine including a lambda controller and an air intake pipe. The tank-venting apparatus includes an adsorption filter, a supply line interconnecting the adsorption filter and the fuel tank, a connecting line interconnecting the adsorption filter and the intake pipe and a tank-venting valve mounted in the connecting line between the adsorption filter and the intake pipe. The method includes the steps of: measuring the pressure difference between pressure in the tank and ambient pressure; when the tank-venting valve is opened, determining whether the pressure difference increases above a threshold value and whether a lean correction by the lambda controller is required; and, drawing the conclusion that the tank-venting apparatus leaks when neither a lean correction is determined nor the pressure difference exceeds the threshold value.

  • Patent number: 5131293
Abstract: An arrangement for controlling in a motor vehicle an electrohydraulically controlled, automatically shifting transmission driven by an internal-combustion engine. The transmission has several shifting programs optimized according to different design criteria which may be selected either manually by the driver or automatically. Using a temperature sensor, a cold-start condition of the motor vehicle is sensed on the basis of which a transmission control system shifts at least for a limited time period according to a warmup shifting program in such a manner that the internal-combustion engine, under identical driving conditions, generates higher exhaust gas mass flows or exhaust gas energy flows than for gear positions shifted according to a consumption-optimized shifting program.

  • Patent number: 5058380
Abstract: An exhaust system of an internal-combustion engine is provided with a small catalyst as a starting catalyst and wherein this small catalyst is longitudinally movably or pivotedly movable into or out of the exhaust pipe of an internal-combustion engine. When exhaust gas flow from the engine is strong, the catalyst is moved into a dead space lateral chamber with respect to the flow in the exhaust pipe.
