  • Patent number: 11859164
Abstract: Scalable biomaterial-based bioreactors are described. In one embodiment, the bioreactor may comprise perforated plates stacked such that the assembled bioreactor has the necessary manifolds and chambers to transport gas and liquids to a biomaterial contained within the bioreactor, and to remove the reaction products. In another embodiment, single use bioreactors are described. Methods of operating the bioreactors are also described.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: April 14, 2021
Date of Patent: January 2, 2024
    Assignee: Battelle Memorial Institute
Inventors: Zia Abdullah, Michael L. Dickens, Micah Paul McCreery, Randy L. Jones, Elvin Ray Beach, III, Jon-David S. Sears, Erin Suzanne Schultz, Stephanie Ann Smith, Paul E. George, II

  • Publication number: 20160256380
Abstract: Described herein are systems, methods and embodiments associated with the use of biomass for generating a preparation that can be used in manufacture of a personal care product. The described embodiments include collection of evidence of toxic cyanobacteria presence within biomass. Upon identification of biomass containing toxic cyanobacteria, embodiments describe processing of the biomass which will ultimately lead to the preparation. Thereafter, regardless of the initial presence of toxins, once the biomass is processed, the preparation can be safely used within a personal care product.

  • Publication number: 20150105536
Abstract: Systems, methods, and other embodiments are described herein for obtaining products from heterogeneous feedstocks containing toxic algae. In one embodiment, a method includes collecting a heterogeneous feedstock. The heterogeneous feedstock is then processed. The embodiment further includes calculating a toxic value for the processed heterogeneous feedstock. It is then determined whether the toxic value of the processed heterogeneous feedstock satisfies a toxic threshold. In response to determining the toxic value does satisfy the toxic threshold, a product is extracted from the heterogeneous feedstock.
