  • Publication number: 20010016244
Abstract: The present invention provides for an article of manufacture, such as a floor covering, formed by an improved process for recycling waste polymeric material comprising a mixture of waste polymeric material wherein the waste polymeric material includes from about 0 to 40 percent aliphatic polyamide material; granulating and densifying the chopped mixture into fragments smaller than the original size of the waste polymeric material; and extruding the ground mixture at a temperature that does not exceed the temperature at which the largest portion of polymer based material decomposes.
    Type: Application
    Filed: February 27, 2001
    Publication date: August 23, 2001
Inventors: Lynn E. Preston, Mark L. Grizzle, Stephen A. Zegler, Paul L. Weinle

  • Patent number: 6228479
Abstract: Articles of manufacture such as building materials are formed from recycled waste polymeric material including 15 to 50 percent aliphatic polyamide material. The articles are formed by chopping and granulating the waste polymeric material into fragments and extruding them at a temperature that is lower than the lowest melting point of the aliphatic polyamide material.

Date of Patent: May 8, 2001
Assignee: Collins & Aikman Floorcoverings, Inc.
Inventors: Stephen A. Zegler, Paul L. Weinle
  • Patent number: 5914353
Abstract: The present invention provides for an improved process for recycling waste polymeric material comprising a mixture of waste polymeric material wherein the waste polymeric material includes from about 0 to 40 percent aliphatic polyamide material; granulating and densifying the chopped mixture into fragments at least about 100 times smaller than the size of the waste polymeric material; and extruding the ground mixture at a temperature that does not exceed the temperature at which the largest portion of polymer based material decomposes.
    Type: Grant

  • Patent number: 5567497
Abstract: A floor covering comprising a floor covering face layer having a thermoplastic lower backing layer and a thermoplastic contact layer that is fusibly compatible with the lower backing layer is disclosed. The upper surface of the contact layer is fused to the lower backing layer and the lower surface of the contact layer includes a plurality of shallow thermoplastic projections which extend away from the floor covering face layer and which are sufficiently elastic to impart skid resistance to the floor covering.

  • Patent number: 4988551
Abstract: A fibrous faced carpet includes a nonwoven fleece fabric positioned against the carpet secondary backing. The fleece fabric is embossed to form high and low areas with the low areas extending into the secondary backing and serving to unitize the fleece fabric with the secondary backing. A layer of pressure sensitive adhesive is on the exposed outer face of the fleece fabric for releasably securing the carpet to an underlying floor. The low areas of the embossed fleece fabric serve for reducing the exposed surface area of the layer of adhesive that is available to contact the underlying floor.
