  • Patent number: 6448088
Abstract: A urine sample is analyzed for urine chemistry, formed bodies, and rare event evidence, all in a single sample container and under low power magnification. The sample container includes a urine sample receiving chamber which is connected to a urine chemistry chamber, to a formed body isolation chamber, and to a rare events detection chamber, so that the urine can flow from the receiving chamber to the other three chambers. The scanning instrument will scan the isolation chamber and can identify formed bodies by their characteristic light wave emission properties which result from the formed bodies exposure to the stains. The formed bodies can also be morphologically examined in the isolation chamber. The rare event detection chamber will include a component which will absorb essentially all of the water in the urine thus concentrating formed bodies on a surface in the chamber.

  • Patent number: 6448846
Abstract: By taking advantage of the ability to control the phase relationship between a processor's output (or portions of a processor's output) and the phase of the pre-processed signal (in a particular frequency range or ranges, a controlled accentuation or enhancement of the processor's effect can be realized. In one embodiment this is achieved by providing a gain control circuit that receives and selectively amplifies the input signal prior to it being summed with the processor's output.

  • Patent number: 6448944
Abstract: A compact, light weight head mounted display in which a pair of matrix display elements are mounted within a housing. The display utilizes a pair of arms or stems that are rotatable mounted to the housing such that the user can pivot each arm from a folded position into an open position. The arms can be spring mounted onto the housing to secure the display to the user's head and can also incorporate earphones that can be retracted into each arm when not in use.

  • Patent number: 6446355
Abstract: Liquid is removed from disks by apparatus and methods for drying a disk that has been wet in a liquid bath. The disk and the bath are separated at a controlled rate to form a monolayer of liquid on the disk as the disk is positioned in a gas-filled volume. The separation may be by moving the disk out of the liquid bath, and the controlled rate is generally not less than the maximum rate at which a meniscus will form between the liquid bath and the surface of the disk when the liquid bath and the disk are separated. The gas-filled volume is defined by a hot chamber that continuously transfers thermal energy to the disk in the gas-filled volume. Hot gas directed into the volume and across the disk and out of the volume continuously transfers thermal energy to the disk. The directing of the gas out of the volume is independent of the separation of the bath and the disk.

  • Patent number: 6449693
Abstract: A processor system is provided that comprises a plurality of L0 caches, a processor having a plurality of execution units, and an L1 cache for caching any data and instructions used by the processor. A portion of the execution units provided are configured so that each execution unit within the portion accesses one of the L0 caches. Each of the L0 caches is accessible by only one of the portion of the execution units, and each L0 cache caches a subset of any data used by the processor which is not cacheable by any of the other L0 caches. The processor system preferably comprises an instruction dispatcher that dispatches instructions executable by the processor and that selectively designates data as cacheable by only one of the L0 caches, preferably at dispatch time.

  • Patent number: 6448718
Abstract: An active matrix electroluminescent (EL) display device has an array of pixels (10) on a substrate (25) each comprising an EL display element (20) and a driving device (22) controlling drive current therethrough in a drive period based on a data signal applied in a preceding address period, and a drive circuit (16, 18) connected to the pixels via sets of address conductors (12, 14) for selecting the rows of pixels and supplying data signals to each selected row of pixels in a respective row address period. The data signals are provided by drive ICs (40). To reduce the number of ICs required, a multiplexing circuit (45) is integrated with the pixel array on the substrate (25) and connected between the drive IC outputs (41) and one set of address conductors (14) and is operable to apply data signals from an individual drive IC output to a respective associated plurality of address conductors in sequence in a row address period.

  • Patent number: 6449680
Abstract: A computer system with various component modules with each of the modules interconnected with a single midplane board, thereby eliminating the need for ribbon cables to interconnect between the modules. One of the modules includes an embedded controller and associated data bus. An in-line connector is coupled in the data bus which receives either a jumper connector or interconnect connector. The interconnect connector intercepts the data bus from the embedded controller and transfers connection to a user added controller. The interconnect connector can operate in two modes, a single mode and a differential mode. The interconnect connector includes logic circuitry that determines the type of controller connected and places the interconnect connector in the appropriate mode. If the logic circuitry detects that a single-ended controller is connected to the interconnect connector, a quick switch, which is connected to one wire of the data bus, is closed, thereby grounding the one wire.

  • Patent number: 6446862
Abstract: A wearable or carryable means typically for being owned, operated, and controlled by an individual buyer allows a purchase to be directed, at least in some parameters, by the buyer. The seller may be a representative of a large organization. The apparatus enables collegial identification of officials representing a seller organization. The invention provides an incidentalist identificational procedure, so that legitimate officials are not offered by a buyer using the invention when the buyer might otherwise be perceived as disrespectful by demanding identification from the seller. The apparatus also allows the buyer to select and control the advertisements displayed to the buyer, rather than leaving this matter up to the sole discretion of the seller.

  • Patent number: 6448811
Abstract: A current reference with reduced sensitivity to process variations includes a variable resistor and a control transistor. The control transistor has a generated current from source-to-drain that first passes through the variable resistor. The control transistor has a reference voltage applied to the gate, and the source-to-gate voltage is a function of the reference voltage and the voltage drop across the variable resistor. A control loop circuit measures the generated current and modifies the resistance value of the variable resistor in response. An external precision resistor is used to measure the generated current, and current variations as a result of process variations are reduced.

  • Patent number: 6449672
Abstract: An arbiter arbitrates between PCI agents within an ASIC. The ASIC interfaces with an external PCI bus. In operation, the arbiter receives request signals from the PCI agents, and in response thereto, generates a single external request signal. Once the grant is received by the ASIC, the arbiter will route it to a selected PCI agent. The selected agent then gains access to the PCI bus and all other agents are locked out until the transaction is completed. The arbiter is implemented in such a way that there is a minium delay between the generation of the request by any agent and the request sent out by the ASIC. This is performed by ORing all requests.

  • Patent number: 6448906
Abstract: A device uses bluetooth techniques to communicate with electronic devices in an airplane. During take off or landing, the radio on board the airplane operates in bluetooth mode to send a global poll to all devices requesting that they respond. If a device responds, then it indicates that the device is on at an unauthorized time. This informs the crew that they should try to find the unauthorized device and turn it off.

  • Patent number: 6449202
Abstract: A direct sensing circuit and method for reading data from a memory cell connected to a bitline, with open bitline sensing without using a reference bitline signal, onto a data line in a data read operation. Prior to the data read operation, both the bitline and the data line are precharged to precharge voltages and a sense node is precharged to ground. A pFET device has its gate coupled to a signal developed on the bitline from the memory cell to detect and amplify the signal level thereof, and has its source coupled to a voltage source and its drain coupled to a sense node, such that the signal developed on the bitline determines the degree of turn-on of the pFET device. An nFET device has its gate coupled to the sense node to detect and amplify the signal level thereof, and has its drain coupled to the data line.
