  • Patent number: 6797454
Abstract: A method and apparatus for thermal processing a photosensitive element includes heating a composition layer on a flexible substrate to a melt temperature of an unirradiated area of the composition layer and maintaining the flexible substrate at a temperature below the melt temperature while pressing a heated absorbent layer against the heated composition layer, and repeating these steps for multiple cycles. A further embodiment of the method includes a step of cooling the flexible substrate and layer laminate on each cycle to maintain the flexible substrate at the desired temperature below that of the heated composition layer.

  • Patent number: 5916403
Abstract: The present invention relates to methods and apparatus for forming seamless cylindrical photosensitive elements of uniform thickness on flexible sleeves. The apparatus for forming a seamless cylindrical photosensitive element of uniform thickness on a flexible sleeve, comprises a mandrel, a mandrel support assembly, a calendering assembly, a drive system and at least a heating element. The methods comprise forming seamless cylindrical photosensitive elements of uniform thickness on flexible sleeves from a stream of molten photopolymerizable material, or a solid or molten sheet of photopolymerizable material. The seamless cylindrical photosensitive elements are formed on polyester sleeves for use on a printing cylinder.

  • Patent number: 5386268
Abstract: An exposure unit and method for imaging a photosensitive material includes a source of radiation for exposing the photosensitive material to actinic radiation such that the radiation strikes the photosensitive material at a plurality of angles of incidence, and apparatus for moving the radiation source relative to and in a plane parallel to the photosensitive material. The exposure unit also has a reflector for controlling (1) the proportion of (a) radiation having perpendicular angles of incidence to (b) radiation having non-perpendicular angles of incidence, such that the radiation having non-perpendicular angles is increased, and (2) the distribution of non-perpendicular angles of incidence.
