Patent number: 10393047Abstract: An engine control system configured to operate an engine is configured to predict an expected duty cycle including an expected demand from the engine, and calculate two or more future operating conditions, each future operating condition including engine control parameters that, when used to control the engine, are expected to result in the engine meeting the expected demand. One of the future operating conditions is selected, and a present operation of the engine is adjusted in response to the selected future operating condition. A vehicle and/or offroad diesel apparatus may comprise the engine control system.Type: GrantFiled: October 17, 2016Date of Patent: August 27, 2019Inventors: Charles E. Ramberg, Stephen A. Dynan, Jack A. Shindle

Patent number: 10381544Abstract: A system and method provides a piezoelectric stack arrangement for reduced driving voltage while maintaining a driving level for active piezoelectric materials. A stack arrangement of d36 shear mode <011>single crystals of both air X-cut and Y-cut ±1:45° (±20°) arrangement are bonded with discrete conductive pillars to form a shear crystal stack. The bonding area between the neighboring crystal parts is minimized. The bonding pillars are positioned at less than a total surface are of the single crystal forming the stack. The stack fabrication is facilitated with a precision assembly system, where crystal parts are placed to desired locations on an assembly fixture for alignment following the preset operation steps. With the reduced clamping effect from bonding due to lower surface coverage of the discrete conductive pillars, such a piezoelectric d36 shear crystal stack exhibits a reduced driving voltage while maintaining a driving level and substantial and surprisingly improved performance.Type: GrantFiled: May 6, 2015Date of Patent: August 13, 2019Assignee: CTS CorporationInventors: Pengdi Han, Jian Tian, Stephen Dynan, Brandon Stone

Patent number: 9833932Abstract: Systems and methods provide for forming layered structures. Textured tapes may be fabricated, having cast and/or embossed patterns that provide for desired flow characteristics in an assembly of stacked, rolled, and/or otherwise assembled tapes. In some cases, shear thinning materials may be formed into textured tapes using localized shear stress to induce shear thinning during a pattern formation. A pattern may be maintained after removal of the shear force due to the high viscosity of the material at low shear stress.Type: GrantFiled: June 29, 2011Date of Patent: December 5, 2017Inventors: Charles E. Ramberg, Stephen A. Dynan

Publication number: 20170167421Abstract: Systems and methods for treating a fluid with a body are disclosed. Various aspects involve treating a fluid with a porous body. In select embodiments, a body comprises ash particles, and the ash particles used to form the body may be selected based on their providing one or more desired properties for a given treatment. Various bodies provide for the reaction and/or removal of a substance in a fluid, often using a porous body comprised of ash particles. Computer-operable methods for matching a source material to an application are disclosed. Certain aspects feature a porous body comprised of ash particles, the ash particles have a particle size distribution and interparticle connectivity that creates a plurality of pores having a pore size distribution and pore connectivity, and the pore size distribution and pore connectivity are such that a first fluid may substantially penetrate the pores.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 17, 2016Publication date: June 15, 2017Inventors: Charles E. Ramberg, Stephen A. Dynan, Jack A. Shindle

Patent number: 9511345Abstract: Systems and methods for fabricating bodies (e.g., porous bodies) are described. Various aspects provide for reactors and the fabrication of reactors. Some reactors include surfaces that provide for heterogeneous reactions involving a fluid (and/or components thereof). A fluid may be a gas and/or a liquid. A contaminant in the fluid (e.g., a dissolved or suspended substance) may react in a reaction. A contaminant may be filtered from a fluid. Some reactors provide for independent control of heat transfer (between the fluid, the reactor, and the environment) with respect to mass transfer (e.g., fluid flow through the reactor).Type: GrantFiled: March 20, 2014Date of Patent: December 6, 2016Inventors: Charles E. Ramberg, Stephen A. Dynan
