    Abstract: Methods and apparatus enable expanding tubulars in a wellbore. In one embodiment, a method includes providing a first tubular string having an expansion member disposed at a lower end and connected with a threaded connection which will permit movement of the expansion member relative to the tubular string. The tubular string is held at the surface of the well while a second, smaller string is run into the first tubular string and engaged with the expansion member. Thereafter, the assembly including the first tubular string, expansion member and second tubular string are run to depth in a wellbore. Finally, the expansion member is urged upwards into the tubular string to expand the tubular string and bring it into frictional contact with surrounding wellbore walls. The initial expansion can be performed with a hydraulic jack and additional expansion can be performed by urging the cone upwards with the second tubular string.

    Abstract: An optical positioning monitoring system is disclosed. The system has an optical sensing member disposed on a wellbore pipe, such as the tubing or production casing. When a tool comprising an actuating member acts on the optical sensing member, an optical signal is returnable from the optical sensing member indicating the position of the tool. The optical sensing member may include an optical fiber and/or any known optical sensors. The actuating member can be a force applicator or a heat applicator. Alternatively, the optical sensing member can be located on the tool and the actuating member can be located on the tubing or production casing.

    Abstract: An anchor for a wellbore is adaptable to be operated in at least two separate and distinct ways. In one embodiment, a whipstock anchor is provided that can be operated either mechanically or hydraulically. In another embodiment, the anchor is designed to run through a restriction in a retracted position and thereafter expanded to position a wellbore tool in the wellbore. Preferably, the anchor is expandable to set in wellbores of various sizes and either cased or uncased.

    Abstract: An optical inclination sensor is provided having at least one reflective surface and at least two separate optical fibers having ends spaced from a reflective surface. As the reflective surface tilts with respect to a pre-determined reference position the gap lengths between the fiber ends and the reflective surface change and the differences in these gap lengths is used to calculate an angle of inclination with respect to a reference position. The optical inclination sensor can include at least one mass attached to a housing and moveable with respect to the housing as the mass and housing are rotated about one or more axes. Optical strain sensors are disposed a various locations between the mass and housing so that as the mass moves with respect to the housing, each one of the optical strain sensors are placed in compression or tension. The housing can be a generally u-shaped housing having two arms and a base section with the mass disposed within the housing.
