  • Publication number: 20080100974
Abstract: An electrical current limiter 1 is provided in which an enclosure 3 combination incorporates an electrical conductor 2 held in effective thermal isolation within an housing 4 having a vacuum 11. In such circumstances known electrical resistivity response of the conductor 2 can be utilised when an electrical fault occurs and therefore the electrical current passing through the limiter 1 increases. The thermal mass of the enclosure 3 combination is designed to limit thermal inertia and therefore an adiabatic temperature response prior to the heating effects of the higher electrical current in the conductor 2 resulting in increased electrical resistivity/impedance and therefore limitation of electrical current.

  • Publication number: 20060181387
Abstract: A jig (10) is used to form a coil (50) for an electrical machine. A plurality of conductive wires (56), each covered in a heat-curable electrically insulated material, are wound around a bobbin (12). Each succeeding winding in contra-wound relative to the previous winding, with the first turn (16) of each succeeding winding overlaying the last turn (5) of the previous winding. Undeformable electrically insulated inserts (54) are inserted into the windings before heating and compressing the coil (50) in the jig (10).

  • Publication number: 20050046414
Abstract: Condition monitoring of an electrical machine is achieved by using electromagnetic finite element analysis to analyse the machine based on model parameters corresponding with at least one fault condition. This allows the effect of the fault condition to be predicted. Metrology is used to recover live measurements for comparison with the predictions from the electro-magnetic finite element analysis to identify any fault signatures within the live measurements, in principle allowing those faults to be detected or diagnosed before they become catastrophic.
