  • Patent number: 5254902
Abstract: Filament supports for supporting and centering a filament in a double-ended lamp envelope include an inlead portion defining a central axis, a filament attachment portion and a centering portion interconnecting the inlead portion and the filament attachment portion. The centering portion contacts an inner surface of the lamp envelope at a plurality of discrete, circumferentially spaced-apart contact regions that are substantially equally spaced from the central axis. The filament supports are attached to opposite ends of the filament for accurately centering the filament within the lamp envelope. The filament supports are particularly useful in a tubular incandescent lamp capsule having an infrared reflective coating on its outer surface.

  • Patent number: 5212422
Abstract: A support for a filament or lamp capsule in a lamp having a base and a light-transmissive envelope includes a support ring that is inserted into the base. The ring can be pressed or otherwise secured into the base. The support ring includes at least one pair of tabs that extend radially inwardly. The tabs include mounting holes aligned generally in a direction extending upwardly from the base toward the envelope for receiving and supporting an electrical lead of the filament or lamp capsule. The tabs can be resilient to forcibly engage the lead of the filament or lamp capsule. Two pairs of tabs can be provided to support two leads of the filament or lamp capsule.

  • Patent number: 5209689
Abstract: A method for mounting a filament in a double ended incandescent lamp capsule. A filament assembly, including a filament, filament supports attached to each end of the filament and an external lead connected to each filament support, is located in a tubular lamp envelope. The position of the filament relative to the lamp envelope is determined, and the filament is moved to a predetermined position relative to the lamp envelope, if necessary. Then, the lamp envelope is heated sufficiently to cause the lamp envelope to deform into contact with at least one of the filament supports so as to securely anchor the filament support. The heating of the lamp envelope in regions of the filament supports can be performed simultaneously or at different times. One or both filament supports can be anchored by the tacking process.

  • Patent number: 4668204
Abstract: A single-ended low wattage high intensity discharge lamp and manufacturing process wherein a sleeve of electrical insulating material having the same coefficient of expansion as quartz is telescoped over an electrical lead a fuzed to the "pinch" seal portion of a quartz envelope.

  • Patent number: 4598342
Abstract: A low wattage tungsten-halogen lamp with an improved filament construction comprising a pair of selectively activated filaments, each having a plurality of coil turns, being intercoupled by a relatively short intermediate member. Preferably, both of the filaments and the intermediate member are formed from a single wire. The spacing between turns of each filament is greater about the central portion of the filament than at the opposed end portions thereof, thereby enhancing visible radiation. Xenon gas, at a pressure of fifteen atmospheres, is preferably used as the inert gas fill for the lamp due to its low thermal conductivity.

  • Patent number: 4536831
Abstract: A lamp member is adapted for use in a lighting unit having a light transmitting cover. The lamp member comprises a base, a tungsten-halogen capsule supported within the base, a first envelope, and a filament structure axially oriented with the first envelope. The lamp member further includes spacer means for maintaining the lamp member and the cover in a spaced-apart relationship when the lamp member is in the spring-biased position within the housing. The spacer means is secured to the lamp member and is in operative contact with the cover. One example of the spacer means is a cylindrical cap made of a ceramic material, the cap being disposed at the top of the capsule and secured thereon. The cylindrical cap is dimensioned so that the size of the replacement lamp is substantially the same size as prior incandescent lamps of which the invention is designed to replace.

  • Patent number: 4480296
Abstract: A tungsten-halogen lamp for use in an automobile headlight comprises a tubular sealed glass capsule containing two coiled tungsten filaments for high and low beam operation, respectively. The low beam filament is disposed substantially orthogonal to a vertical plane containing the lamp axis, with the center of that filament length having a predetermined offset from that vertical plane and being disposed at or near the focal point of the reflector. The high beam filament is disposed substantially parallel to the lamp axis on the opposite side of the vertical plane from at least a major portion of the low beam filament. The filaments are spaced apart with the high beam filament lying in a horizontal plane spaced below the low beam filament, and the axis of the high beam filament orthogonally intersects a plane containing in the axis of the low beam filament.
