Patent number: 6821492Abstract: A strengthened thin-walled catalytic converter substrate includes thin perimeter walls and thin interior walls defining cells and a catalyst washcoat selectively disposed on the substrate. Washcoat thickness is increased in those cells having the most impact on final catalyst strength, typically the outer cells defined by the perimeter walls. A method for maximizing overall catalyst strength with minimal substrate thermal mass includes selectively applying washcoat based on desired substrate strength and converter assembly method.Type: GrantFiled: September 13, 2000Date of Patent: November 23, 2004Assignee: Delphi Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Stephen Joe Myers, Michael Ralph Foster, Fong Z. Patent number: 6613296Abstract: A relieved support material for a catalytic converter has a strip of support material with one or more relief cuts. This is used to insulate a segment of catalyst along with one or more inner end-cones positioned at the beginning and end of the converter. The support material is wrapped around the catalyst and the one or more inner end-cones. The wrapped support material is then covered with an outer-layer shell.Type: GrantFiled: January 31, 2000Date of Patent: September 2, 2003Assignee: Delphi Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Stephen Joe Myers, Alan Gerard Turek

Patent number: 6591497Abstract: A catalytic converter is constructed by measuring a substrate to be placed within the outer shell or can, wrapping the substrate in a selected mat and loading the package (mat and substrate) into the can. The can is larger than it will be at completion of manufacture to render such loading easier. Subsequent to loading, the measurement of the substrate is used to direct the degree to which the can is reduced in outside dimension such that a selected annulus is created between the substrate and can, said annulus being occupied by said mat.Type: GrantFiled: August 27, 1998Date of Patent: July 15, 2003Assignee: Delphi Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Michael Ralph Foster, Stephen Joe Myers, Robert Anthony Lawrence

Publication number: 20020141907Abstract: A short shell highly insulated converter includes a short shell forming a generally tubular body for housing a catalyst substrate. End cones having a wide-open end and a narrow open end comprise an inner wall forming a first opening at the wide-open end for engaging the catalyst substrate. The end cones further comprise an outer wall extending beyond the inner wall to form a second wider opening at the wide-open end for engaging the short shell. The inner wall and outer wall converge at the narrow open end to form a snout. A full-length insulating layer is disposed adjacent the catalyst substrate and is selected based upon the amount of overlap between the end cone and the catalyst substrate, the full-length insulating layer being substantially co-extensive with the catalyst substrate. A partial length insulating layer is disposed between the inner insulating layer and the short shell, the partial length insulating layer being generally co-extensive with the short shell.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 9, 2001Publication date: October 3, 2002Inventor: Stephen Joe Myers

Patent number: 6454317Abstract: A solid plate of material has an outer side and an inner side. A hole is disposed in and through the solid plate, the hole being capable of receiving from the outer side one end of an exhaust pipe. The inner side of the solid plate has a collar capable of being received within an annular edge of a catalytic converter housing. The outer and inner sides of the end plate have an area outside the circumference of the catalytic converter housing that contains at least one hole capable of receiving a bolt or other fastening mechanism.Type: GrantFiled: April 4, 2000Date of Patent: September 24, 2002Assignee: Delphi Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Stephen Joe Myers, Jeffrey B. Hardesty

Patent number: 6158120Abstract: An intumescent catalyst mounting mat is provided by cutting a single piece of mat into a desired profile and cutting a slit about 1/2 way through the thickness of the mat at a selected fold line. The mat is then easily folded upon itself to create a double thickness mat that is already secured to the next layer and may have any desired profile.Type: GrantFiled: December 14, 1998Date of Patent: December 12, 2000Assignee: General Motors CorporationInventors: Michael Ralph Foster, Robert Anthony Lawrence, Stephen Joe Myers, Alan Gerard Turek

Patent number: 6001314Abstract: A housing for a catalytic converter for an automotive vehicle engine exhaust system is formed of two deep drawn shells having open inner ends welded together in generally abutting relation. Modified conical outer ends taper to reduced size openings for connection to associated exhaust system pipes. To permit deep drawing, the outer ends as seen in longitudinal cross section are formed with curved surfaces including an intermediate curvature replacing a conventional conical shape and defined by radii of a value between 0.5 and 0.8 times the inner diameter of the tubular body portions of the respective shells which enclose a catalytic element. Connecting radii are preferably not greater than 0.1 times the tubular portion inner diameter. Various alternative forms of welded inner end joints are disclosed.Type: GrantFiled: September 15, 1997Date of Patent: December 14, 1999Assignee: General Motors CorporationInventors: Roger Eugene Buck, Dana Michael Serrels, Stephen Joe Myers
